In the annual World’s Best Awards 2025 survey, readers of Travel+Leisure expressed a strong preference for major cities with ample space and rich opportunities for discovery.
According to readers’ assessments, the top cities in both the world and Asia rankings share common traits that captivate travellers: breathtaking attractions, world-class luxury accommodations, vibrant culinary scenes and dynamic atmospheres that are both lively and immersive.
Each winning city possesses its own distinct identity and unique appeal, serving as a reminder that the world is full of new wonders waiting to be explored.
Notably, seven out of the top ten cities in the global ranking are located in Asia, underscoring the region’s powerful appeal as a tourism hotspot. This year, readers paid special attention to criteria such as natural landscapes, historical and cultural heritage, diverse cuisine, hotel quality, nightlife and the warmth of local people.
Once a bustling and significant trading port in Southeast Asia, Hoi An today stands out with its distinct ancient architecture and extensive network of rivers and canals. UNESCO describes the city as “a harmonious fusion of indigenous and foreign cultures”, visible in every tile roof, old house, temple and assembly hall.
Hoi An was inscribed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in recognition of its exceptional historical, architectural and cultural values.
The town continues to enchant visitors with its monthly Full Moon Lantern Festival, when the entire ancient quarter is lit up with colourful lanterns and floating candles, casting a magical and romantic glow over the streets and waterways.
With an impressive reader score of 91.00, the ancient town of Hoi An has once again affirmed its position as one of the top travel destinations in Asia and the world. The city has been inducted into Travel+Leisure’s World’s Best Awards Hall of Fame, a distinction reserved for destinations that have been honoured multiple years in a row in the magazine’s prestigious awards programme.
