General Secretary To Lam meets with Speaker of the UK House of Commons Lindsay Hoyle in London

WVR - On October 29, within the framework of his official visit to the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee To Lam held a meeting with UK House of Commons Speaker Lindsay Hoyle at the Westminster Palace in London.

At the meeting, General Secretary To Lam has expressed his hope that cooperation between Vietnam and the UK in various fields, especially parliamentary collaboration, will be further strengthened and elevated to a level commensurate with the scope of their relationship, their potential, and the expectations of their people.

Speaker Lindsay Hoyle warmly welcomed and highly appreciated the official visit of General Secretary To Lam, his spouse, and the high-level Vietnamese delegation. He emphasized that this visit marks a new phase of cooperation, holding historical significance in bilateral relations across all sectors, especially in parliamentary collaboration.

Mr. Lindsay Hoyle expressed admiration for the Vietnamese people's heroic tradition in their struggle for national independence and reunification. He was impressed by Vietnam's achievements over the past 80 years, particularly in maintaining political stability, economic and social development, and international integration, considering Vietnam as an “Asian tiger”.

Delighted with the increasingly fruitful and substantive cooperation between the parliaments of the two countries, the Speaker highlighted that these are solid foundations contributing significantly to deepening the traditional friendship between Vietnam and the UK.

Sincerely thanking Speaker Hoyle and the UK Parliament for their warm hospitality towards him and the high-level Vietnamese delegation, General Secretary To Lam affirmed that the Party, State, and National Assembly of Vietnam always value the development of traditional friendship with the UK. He noted that the parliamentary channel plays a practical role in promoting and overseeing the implementation of intergovernmental agreements, while also deepening mutual understanding and trust between the two nations.

The General Secretary expressed confidence that Vietnam-UK cooperation in various fields, especially parliamentary collaboration, will be further strengthened and elevated, matching the level of the relationship, the potential of both sides, and the expectations of the people of the two countries.

Appreciating the role of the UK House of Commons in the British political system, particularly in legislation and foreign policy formulation, as well as the positive contributions of Mr. Hoyle and UK Parliament leaders to parliamentary cooperation and bilateral relations, the General Secretary urged the House of Commons to continue supporting and effectively implementing cooperation agreements between the two governments. This includes the UK-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (UKVFTA), the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), educational and training cooperation programs, scientific research, innovation, and human resource development. He also called for continued resources for development cooperation with Vietnam, especially in clean energy, climate change mitigation, and public health.

The General Secretary thanked the UK Parliament for consistently supporting the successful integration of the Vietnamese community into local society. He urged the House of Commons to support negotiations and the signing of a labor cooperation agreement between the two countries, creating a legal framework for Vietnamese citizens with legitimate aspirations to work legally in the UK.

Speaker Lindsay Hoyle emphasized the desire for both countries to jointly build the future, with the House of Commons supporting the UK Government in enhancing cooperation with Vietnam, especially in areas where the UK has strengths such as education and training, healthcare, climate change mitigation, and promoting people-to-people exchanges.

The two leaders agreed to continue strengthening cooperation between the two parliaments through regular exchanges of delegations at all levels, especially high-level ones. They also discussed forming friendship parliamentary groups and promoting exchanges and interactions among specialized committees, enhancing legislative experience sharing, and improving the legal framework to facilitate the expansion of bilateral cooperation.

They also discussed enhancing coordination at multilateral parliamentary forums such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and regional parliamentary cooperation mechanisms. Regarding the South China Sea issue, General Secretary Tô Lâm urged the UK Parliament to maintain an objective and balanced stance, supporting ASEAN's viewpoint in resolving disputes through peaceful means based on international law, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

On this occasion, General Secretary To Lam conveyed the regards and invitation from National Assembly Chairman Trần Thanh Mẫn to Mr. Lindsay Hoyle to visit Vietnam. Speaker Lindsay Hoyle gladly accepted the invitation and expressed his hope to visit Vietnam soon.
