Held over two days, October 29-30, the workshop aims to promote the exchange of experiences, share policy solutions, and strengthen regional cooperation in ensuring food security.

The workshop saw the participation of representatives from policy-making agencies, international organizations, research institutes, experts, and businesses operating in the fields of agriculture, food, and sustainable development. The opening session was attended by representatives from the leadership of the Diplomatic Academy, the French PECC Committee, and the International PECC Secretariat.

In the context of climate change, natural disasters, geopolitical instability, and supply chain disruptions continuing to pose challenges to the food system, enhancing resilience and ensuring a stable supply has become an urgent requirement for economies in the region. This necessitates countries to both strengthen domestic production capabilities and diversify supply sources, maintain trade flows, and enhance regional coordination.

Speaking at the workshop, Dr. Nguyen Hung Son, Director of the Diplomatic Academy and Chairman of the Vietnam National Committee for Pacific Economic Cooperation (VNCPEC), emphasized that ensuring food security should be approached by enhancing the responsiveness and recovery capacity of the entire food system against fluctuations. Accordingly, strengthening domestic production capacity should be linked with diversifying supply sources, maintaining stable trade, and promoting regional cooperation. Appreciating the initiative of organizing the workshop by FPTPEC, Dr. Nguyen Hung Son expressed hope that the discussions at the workshop would contribute to identifying practical solutions that can be applied and expanded, while also opening up cooperation opportunities among PECC member economies.

On this basis, the workshop focused on discussing three main groups of issues. First, the challenges to food security and the resilience of the agricultural-food system, especially the impacts of climate change, geopolitical instability, health crises, and economic fluctuations. Second, innovative solutions, including the application of technology in agriculture, the development of sustainable production methods, strengthening local value chains, and improving market access. Third, mechanisms, policies, and forms of cooperation to replicate effective solutions, mobilize financial resources, and enhance food crisis management capabilities.

Notably, presentations addressed practical issues such as the food self-sufficiency of the Mekong sub-region countries from 2026–2035; adapting to climate change, developing agricultural value chains, and low-emission rice production in Vietnam; along with experiences in building early warning systems for nutritional insecurity risks in ASEAN countries. These topics contribute to suggesting directions for the application of science and technology, policy improvement, and strengthening cooperation suitable to the conditions of each economy.

Through policy exchanges and experience sharing among participants, the workshop aims to promote practical cooperation initiatives, encourage the application of innovative solutions, and enhance the responsiveness of economies to risks to food security in the Asia-Pacific region.
