Australia helps Vietnam with sustainable forest management

The “Responsible Asia Forestry and Trade Partnership” project (RAFT3) funded by the Australian Government has provided technical support for three Vietnamese companies in sustainable forest management, heard a workshop in Tuy Hoa city, the central province of Phu Yen, on August 9.

Two of the three companies have received licenses for the management of more than 3,000 hectares of forest by the Forest Stewardship Council, a global not-for-profit organization that sets the standards for what is a responsibly managed forest, both environmentally and socially.

Besides, the project has set up a manual guiding how to indentify wood in the prohibited list, while helping businesses create a domestic market of forestry products.

The project was initially scheduled to last from December 2016 to March 2018, and then was expanded to August 2018.

It was financed by the Australian Government via WWF-Vietnam, TRAFFIC and RECOFTC, with total funding of more than 188,000 AUD.

Benjamin Rawson, a representative of RAFT3, said the project targets legal and responsible wood trade, and regular and sustainable management of planted forests in Vietnam in line with international standards by 2020.
