Vietnamese films conquer French audiences

Vietnamese director Pham Thien An won the Camera d'Or (Golden Camera) at the 76th Cannes Film Festival in May 2023 with the movie “Inside the yellow cocoon shell”.

The movie tells a story about Thien who, after his sister-in-law dies in a freak motorcycle accident in Ho Chi Minh City, is tasked to bring her remains to their countryside hometown for her funeral and take care of his 5-year-old nephew Dao who miraculously survived the crash.

Amidst the mystical landscapes of rural areas in Vietnam, Thien begins a search for his elder brother who vanished years ago to hand Dao over to him - a journey that deeply questions his faith.

According to the audiences, An's supremely accomplished first feature may seem narratively slender for its three-hour runtime, but its layered abundance of sensory detail casts an unshakable spell.

The movie is being screened in several cinemas in France such as MK2 Beaubourg, Reflet Medicis, Le Méliès, Forum des Images, and Luxor.
