US aircraft visit elevates Vietnam-US diplomatic relationship

On 5 March, with the approval of Vietnamese government, the US aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson docked Da Nang city for a five-day visit under the invitation of the US Embassy in Vietnam. This is the first US aircraft carrier that visited Vietnam in more than 40 years and marked a milestone in the diplomatic relationship between Vietnam and the US.

On behalf of Da Nang leaders, Director of the Da Nang Department of Foreign Affairs Lam Quang Minh hosted the welcome ceremony of the USS Carl Vinson at Tien Sa port on the afternoon of 5 March. 

Attending the ceremony were representatives of Military Zone 5 High Command, the municipal Border Guard Command, the High Command of the Naval Zone 3, the External Relations Department of the Ministry of Defense; Da Nang Department of Foreign Affairs and some other related agencies. From the United States delegation, representatives of the US Embassy in Vietnam, the US Defense Attache and a number of US agencies in Vietnam were present at the ceremony.

The aircraft carrier arrived with two escort ships, cruiser US Lake Champlain (CG 57) and destroyer USS Wayne E. Meyer (DDG 108). The Carl Vinson Strike Group is on a regularly scheduled deployment in the Indo-Pacific region. 

After the welcoming ceremony, Director of the Da Nang Department of Foreign Affairs Lam Quang Minh and Commander, U.S. 7th Fleet, Vice Adm. Phillip G. Sawyer co-chaired a press conference to introduce the schedule of the visit in Da Nang.

Speaking at the press conference, US Ambassador to Vietnam Daniel Kritenbrink said: "The visit marks an enormously significant milestone in our bilateral relations and demonstrates US support for a strong, prosperous, and independent Vietnam."

During this visit, representatives of the US Fleet will pay a courtesy call to the leaders of Da Nang City, the Commander of Vietnam People's Navy and the Commander of the 3rd Marine Division. Sailors will participate in cultural and professional exchanges during community service projects, sports competitions, and receptions planned for the port call. Additionally, Navy musicians from the US 7th Fleed Band will perform free concerts for the public. 

Carl Vinson is America's third Nimitz-class aircraft carrier with a crew of 5,000 sailors who support and conduct air operations at sea. The strike group is comprised of a total 6,000 sailors, an aircraft carrier, an air wing, a cruiser, and two destroyers. 

The visit of the USS aircraft carrier marks the development of Vietnam-US relations in line with the comprehensive partnership framework and agreement of the two countries' leaders. At the same time, it is contributing to the maintenance of peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region. 

This event demonstrated Vietnam's logistics and technical capabilities in receiving foreign naval ships, which enhanced the position and role of Vietnam and contributed to promoting the image of the country and people of Vietnam to the region and the world.
