This was an important event marking a milestone in the university's improvement of information and communication technology training in the digital age. The Prime Minister's Decision No. 15/QĐ-TTg on the establishment of the VKU made it became the UD's 6th member university which merged and restructured educational institutions including the Vietnam - Korea Friendship Information Technology College (under the Ministry of Information and Communications); the College of Information Technology, the School of Information and Communication Technology and some other units of the UD.
The ceremony drew the presence of Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) Nguyen Van Phuc, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) Phan Tam, Republic of Korea (ROK)'s Ambassador to Vietnam Park Noh Wan, former Deputy Minister of MOET Prof. Dr. Bui Van Ga, the UD's President Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Vu and Vice Presidents - Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ngo Van Duong, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Thanh Bac, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Quang Son, Country Director of KOICA in Vietnam Cho Han Deog, leader representatives of the ROK's Embassy in Vietnam, ROK's General Consulate in Danang, Departments of Organization and Personnel of the MOET and MIC, the UD's member and affiliated units, localities, enterprises, partners, media organizations as well as all leaders, former leaders, lecturers and students of units merged into the VKU.
At the ceremony, Dr. Pham Xuan Hau - Deputy Director of the MOET's Department of Organization and Personnel and the MOET's Deputy Minister Nguyen Van Phuc respectfully presented the Prime Minister's Decision No. 15/QĐ-TTg on the VKU’s establishment (signed on 3rd January 2020) to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Vu - the UD's President and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Huynh Cong Phap - Interim Rector of the VKU.
Speaking at the ceremony, on behalf of the MOET's leaders, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Phuc expressed his joy and sent his best wishes to the UD and all leaders, lecturers and students of the VKU. Deputy Minister Nguyen Van Phuc acknowledged and highly appreciated the UD's significant role and contribution to the cause of education and training in the `and the whole country.
The MOET's Deputy Minister emphasized the great significance of the VKU’s establishment, which not only contributes to accomplishing the UD's network of member units but also actively contributes to the implementation of the Resolution No.43 of the Party's Politburo in developing Danang city in the new period, providing high-quality human resources for the country's key technology industries.
The MIC’s Deputy Minister Dr. Phan Tam congratulated the UD and the VKU on this important event. He emphasized that the great efforts and contributions of generations of leaders, lecturers, students and alumni of the Vietnam – Korea Friendship IT College and other constituent units of the VKU over the past 15 years have helped to build the new brand of educational institution which is the first information and communication technology university in the Central – Highlands region that is associated with the Vietnam – Koreafriendship and cooperation.
Dr. Phan Tam stressed that the establishment of the VKU by upgrading and merging some constituent units is “a bright spot in the cause of nurturing the friendship as well as educational, scientific and cultural cooperation between the two countries of Vietnam – ROK”. He expressed his firm belief and hoped the UD and the VKU will work closely with the business community to build and develop the university to a new height, contributing to the implementation of the IT development strategy and national digital transformation plan with the vision of making Vietnam become a strong IT country, building IT as one of the key economic sectors, contributing to the sustainable development of the country.
Also at the ceremony, ROK Ambassador to Vietnam Park Noh Wan made a speech to congratulate the event “of great significance showing the considerable change of the university”. The Ambassador emphasized the strategy of continuously cultivating the traditional strategic partnership and cooperation between the two countries in which high-quality human resources training plays an important role to meet the needs of investment and development cooperation of the two countries’ businesses.
The Ambassador shared that, the ROK government will continue supporting the development of the Central region and Danang city. The Korean sides will re-start their projects after the interruption due to the Covid-19 pandemic. He expressed his belief and affirmed the support of the ROK to fulfill the VKU’s missions of bridging the friendship between the two countries of Vietnam and ROK.
In the statement assigning new responsibilities to the university, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Vu – the UD's President, sent his best wishes to the generations of VKU’s leaders, staff, lecturers, alumni and students, as well as its constituent units. Especially, the UD’s President highly appreciated the attention, direction and support of the two governments of Vietnam and ROK, the MOET, the MIC, and the other ministries, as well as branches of Danang city and localities that helped the UD has the 6th member university to actively contribute to the mission of “developing the region and the country”, in which the important task is to provide high-quality human resources in the fields of information and communication technology. This is a breakthrough for the UD to continue developing to be one of the three key centers of training, scientific research and international cooperation of the country, with reputable ranking in the regional and international higher education system.

The UD’s President emphasized the VKU’s establishment "expressed the strategic vision and high political determination" of the Prime Minister, the Government and the MOET, the MIC, branches, localities and the UD as well as its constituent units, along with the valuable support of the ROK Government. Especially, the presence of the Deputy Ministers of the MOET, the MIC and the ROK Ambassador in Vietnam “showed the support and strong commitment to the long-term development of the VKU as well as the UD”.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Vu suggested that the VKU’s leaders and staff be aware of the new missions and focus on performing the following important tasks:
(1) Stabilizing the leadership structure at all levels in accordance with the spirit of democracy, publicity, capacity and strength-based development for the common goals;
(2) Stabilizing work spirit, building solidarity, unification in all staff, lecturers and students, inheriting and promoting good traditions to develop the university;
(3) Implementing the procedures to quickly enroll students, train and conduct scientific research in the coming time, considering this as a vital core task;
(4) Receiving, managing, developing and effectively using the university's resources and facilities;
(5) Promoting the preparation and successfully organizing the VKU’s Party Congress based on the consolidation of constituent units’ Party Committees and Party Cells to comprehensively lead all aspects of the university;
(6) Developing a Development Strategy to 2025, vision to 2035 with objectives, process path, feasible and effective solutions to truly deserve a reliable address for training high-quality human resources of Danang city, the Central-Highlands region as well as the whole country, making a positive contribution to the development of the UD and higher education in the country.
In the inauguration address, VKU’s Interim Rector Assoc. Prof. Dr. Huynh Cong Phap sincerely thanked all former leaders, officials and lecturers of the VKU’s constituent units for "unanimously working together, persisting for more than 10 years of building and implementing the proposal to establish the university under the direction of the Prime Minister and the two ministries, localities, as well as the support of the ROK government".
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Huynh Cong Phap expressed his honor and pride when being entrusted by the UD's leaders with a new responsibility. He committed to working with the university's staff to lead, perform tasks, overcome challenges and difficulties to soon stabilize VKU’s operations, continue to achieve important goals, which should be worthy of the trust and expectation of leaders at all levels, officials, lecturers and students of the university.
The VKU is located on a 21.5-hectare area of the UD’s Construction Project in Hoa Quy Ward, Ngu Hanh Son District, Da Nang City with modern facilities (which have been invested of more than 1,000 billion VND from the Vietnamese Government and 16.2 million USD from the ROK Government's non-refundable ODA). It has a strong potential of personnel (139 lecturers including 2 Associate Professors, 32 PhDs and 19 doctoral students). The organization of the VKU is expected to have 5 faculties, 8 functional offices, 3 centers and 2 affiliated divisions with nearly 2,000 students. It is expected that there will be 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students by 2025. In 2020, the VKU plans to enroll 1,200 students of 3 undergraduate majors (Information Technology, Computer Engineering Technology and Business Administration) and continue to implement undergraduate and postgraduate training programs with the majors meeting the requirements of digital transformation and the 4th industrial revolution such as Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Robotics, IoT, Information Security, Digital Economics, E-Commerce, Logistics, etc. |
