Quang Trach 1 Thermal Power Project: Determined to generate electricity from both units by 2026

WVR - This goal was clearly affirmed by Vietnam Electricity (EVN) at the First Oil Firing Ceremony of Boiler Unit 1 of the Quang Trach I Thermal Power Plant project at Phu Trach commune, Quang Tri province, on August 18, 2025.

Key milestone

The first oil firing of Boiler Unit 1 of the Quang Trach thermal power project was successfully conducted at 11 a.m. on August 16, 2025. This is considered a key milestone in the project's implementation, marking the transition from construction to the commissioning phase, leading to the synchronization and electricity generation of the units.

EVN General Director Nguyen Anh Tuan emphasized that the organization of the First Oil Firing Ceremony of Boiler Unit 1 received significant attention from Quang Tri province leaders and EVN. It highlights the project's implementation process, creating a vibrant competitive spirit among participating units, fostering unity and collaboration to strive for outstanding completion of tasks, awakening a sense of responsibility, determination to overcome difficulties, and creative labor spirit to synchronize Unit 1 in 2025 and generate electricity from both units in 2026.

Staying focused, with relentless efforts

However, to achieve the goal of generating electricity from the units by 2026, the project still faces a significant and complex workload. Therefore, EVN's General Director requires the Project Management Board 2, consultants, and contractors to stay focused on the goal, closely monitor each specific task, especially those on the project's critical path, promptly identify difficulties and obstacles, and find all possible solutions.

In the upcoming phase, Mr. Nguyen Anh Tuan urged contractors to concentrate all resources to accelerate progress, ensuring quality, safety, and environmental standards during construction.

"As the investor, I pledge to always accompany, facilitate, and share difficulties with contractors based on the signed contract," Mr. Nguyen Anh Tuan affirmed.

Meanwhile, Quang Tri province's Standing Vice Chairman Hoang Nam stated that after the First Oil Firing Ceremony of Boiler Unit 1, the next important goals are to commercially operate Quang Trach I Thermal Power Plant in 2026; commence construction of Quang Trach II LNG Plant and select the investor for Quang Trach III LNG Plant to ensure progress according to the approved Power Plan VIII.

To soon realize these goals, Quang Tri province leaders requested EVN, as the investor, to maximize resources, direct units to accelerate construction progress, ensure quality, labor safety, environmental protection, security, and social safety in the area.

Contractor consortiums, consulting, and construction units are urged to continue promoting their sense of responsibility, overcoming weather challenges, competing in creative labor, creating new momentum and determination to achieve the set progress goals.

National Key Power Project

The Quang Trach I Thermal Power Plant project is part of the Quang Trach Power Center, assigned by EVN to the Project Management Board 2 as the investor representative, along with other projects at the Quang Trach Power Center, covering a total area of approximately 48.6 hectares in Phu Trach commune, Quang Tri province (formerly Quang Dong commune, Quang Trach district, Quang Binh province).

The project includes 2 units with a total installed capacity of 1,403 MW. Once operational, the plant will supply the national power system with approximately 9.1 billion kWh annually, contributing to national energy security and enhancing the safety and stability of the power system. The total investment for the project is over 42,000 billion VND, utilizing EVN's funds (30%) and domestic commercial loans (70%) funded by the Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Foreign Trade of Vietnam.

The design, supply of goods, and construction package of the project is executed by a consortium of three contractors: Mitsubishi Corporation (Japanese contractor), Hyundai E&C (Korean contractor), and Construction Corporation No. 1 (Vietnamese contractor). These are all major, reputable contractors with capability and experience in large thermal power projects.

Advanced, environmentally friendly technology

The Quang Trach I Thermal Power Plant uses ultra-supercritical USC technology with a direct-fired pulverized coal (PC) boiler. The turbine is a traditional steam condensing type with supercritical steam parameters: Main steam pressure 27Mpa; main steam temperature 600 degrees Celsius; reheated steam temperature 610 degrees Celsius.

This is the most advanced technology and highest plant parameters currently in Vietnam and is used in many developed countries worldwide. Notably, the coal conveyor system, desulfurization, and dust removal systems of the plant all adhere to European standards, ensuring that the concentrations of substances in emissions and wastewater before discharge meet environmental protection standards according to state regulations and World Bank standards.

During operation, environmental data from the Quang Trach I Thermal Power Plant is transmitted to the Quang Tri Department of Agriculture and Environment for direct 24/7 monitoring in compliance with state environmental management regulations.
