On the afternoon of September 24 (local time), at the United Nations headquarters, President Luong Cuong met with Annalena Baerbock, President of the 80th UN General Assembly.
The President of the UN General Assembly warmly congratulated Vietnam on the occasion of its 80th National Day, coinciding with the UN's 80th anniversary, as well as its upcoming hosting of the opening ceremony for the UN Convention on Cybercrime at the end of October and its role as Chair of the 11th Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons in 2026.
Ms. Baerbock highly appreciated President Cuong's speech and important message at the General Assembly on September 23, which demonstrated strong support for the United Nations in general and the theme of this year's session in particular.
Affirming the shared perspectives between Vietnam and the United Nations on global issues and their commitment to multilateralism and the UN, Ms. Baerbock praised Vietnam's active, dynamic role and its increasingly significant contributions to UN bodies and forums, including the General Assembly, especially amid current global and UN challenges.
Highlighting Vietnam's initiative for the International Day of Epidemic Preparedness on December 27, adopted by the United Nations in 2020, the President of the General Assembly expressed hope for continued support and active participation from Vietnam in the second high-level conference on pandemic prevention and response scheduled for 2026.
President Luong Cuong congratulated Annalena Baerbock on her election as President of the 80th UN General Assembly and commended the theme of this year's session she proposed – “80 Years Together and Beyond for Peace, Development, and Humanity”.

Emphasizing Vietnam's consistent foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, multilateralization, and diversification, as an active and responsible member of the international community, President Luong Cuong expressed strong support for the central role of the United Nations in global governance, coordinating and leading multilateral efforts, and proposing global solutions.
Sharing the UN General Assembly President's assessment of the complex global situation with many difficulties and challenges, President Cuong expressed confidence that with the support of the majority of member states, the United Nations will stay true to its goals and principles. He suggested that the UN General Assembly should promote increased political determination, strengthen international cooperation and solidarity, and uphold multilateralism and international law.
Affirming Vietnam's readiness to enhance its contributions to the UN's common work, President Cuong shared with Ms. Baerbock Vietnam's preparations to host the opening ceremony for the UN Convention on Cybercrime in Hanoi in October 2025, its role as Chair of the 11th Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons in 2026, as well as its candidacy for various important UN bodies and positions, seeking the General Assembly President's active support for Vietnam's efforts.
Appreciating Ms. Baerbock's priorities and commitments, especially in building the Office of the President of the General Assembly, President Cuong requested that Ms. Baerbock continue to support and facilitate Vietnamese personnel working at the United Nations, including the Office of the President of the General Assembly.
Both sides agreed to continue close cooperation to promote the shared priorities of Vietnam and the United Nations in the coming time.
| Annalena Baerbock was formerly the Foreign Minister of Germany. She is the fifth woman and one of the youngest to hold this position since the United Nations was established 80 years ago. The main priorities of the President of the UN General Assembly include: Promoting UN reform; ensuring goals of peace, security, sustainable development, and humanity; promoting a United Nations for all. |
