President Luong Cuong and spouse returns to Hanoi, concluding trip for UNGA 80, bilateral activities in US

This is President Cuong’s first working visit to attend a multilateral diplomatic event at the world’s largest and most important forum, which took place as the UN marks its 80th anniversary. At the same time, it also marks two years since Vietnam and the US established a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and coincides with the 30th anniversary of the normalisation of bilateral relations.
President Luong Cuong and his spouse conducted a visit to the United States from September 21-24. During this visit, President Luong Cuong joined 103 heads of state, 46 prime ministers, and senior representatives from UN member states, as well as leaders of international and regional organizations, to attend the solemn 80th anniversary celebration of the United Nations.

The head of the Vietnamese state attended the opening of the United Nations General Assembly's 80th High-Level General Debate and delivered a key-note speech with the overarching message: “Honouring the value of peace, transformative change to build a sustainable future”.

Affirming that peace is both a goal and a prerequisite for building a stable, fair, democratic, and prosperous future, the President called on nations to adhere to international law and the United Nations Charter, respect independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, refrain from interfering in internal affairs, avoid the use of force or threats, and resolve disputes through peaceful means.
President Luong Cuong affirmed that Vietnam consistently strives and collaborates with all nations to shoulder common responsibilities, overcome challenges, and promote transformative change to create a peaceful, stable, prosperous, and sustainable world, bringing happiness and prosperity to all people. On this occasion, President Luong Cuong extended an invitation to nations to attend the signing ceremony of the United Nations Convention on Cybercrime in Hanoi on October 25, 2025.

The head of the Vietnamese state also attended and spoke at the Special High-Level Event on Climate Action. Here, to collectively overcome the challenges of climate change, the President emphasized that nations need to fully and promptly fulfill their commitments on climate finance, especially resources for a just transition, ensuring social welfare, creating jobs, and supporting vulnerable workers and communities.
During the 80th United Nations General Assembly High-Level Session, the President met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock, and held bilateral meetings with leaders such as President Emomali Rahmon of Tajikistan, Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker, Paraguayan President Santiago Peña Palacios, Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov, and Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

Regarding bilateral activities, upon arriving in the United States, in Seattle, President Luong Cuong met with Washington State Lieutenant Governor Denny Heck and a delegation from Oregon.
In New York, he also met with US leaders, executives of major US corporations, longtime friends and leading scholars; attended a gathering with Vietnamese and US war veterans who fought in the war in Vietnam; met with staff of Vietnam’s representative missions and representatives of the Vietnamese community; and hosted a celebration marking the 80th anniversary of Vietnam’s National Day in New York. These activities affirmed Vietnam’s commitment to deepening ties with the US, especially in economy, trade, investment, and science-technology, and to accelerating the implementation of the high-level agreements and commitments.

With messages of peace, reconciliation, healing, responsibility, and joint efforts to build a sustainable future, the President’s trip was a great success both multilaterally and bilaterally. It left a strong impression of Vietnam’s role, position, and substantive contributions to addressing global issues, as well as in promoting Vietnam–US relations and Vietnam’s relations with other countries, thereby contributing to peace and development in the regions and the world.
