At the courtesy call with Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh, Permanent Secretary Soe Han has stated that Myanmar would actively support Vietnam to fulfill its responsibility as the ASEAN Chairmanship for 2020 and non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2020 – 2021 term; closely coordinated with Vietnam in common regional security issues, including the East Sea, as well as the usage and management of Me Kong river.
Permanent Secretary Soe Han also forwarded a message from the President and National Advisor to invite Senior leaders of Vietnam to visit in due time.
At the annual political consultation, Deputy FM Nguyen Minh Vu and Permanent Secretary of Myanmar Ministry of Foreign Affairs had exchanged about improving the Vietnam – Myanmar Comprehensive partnership, specifically materializing high-level agreements and documents signed recently.
Both sides highly evaluated on the developments of the bilateral relations on many sectors, specifically on trade and investments. Total turnover has increased by 5.5 times, from 152 million USD in 2010 to 860 million USD in 2018 and is approaching the target of 1 billion USD by 2020; Vietnam is now ranked as 7th in its investment in Myanmar with 18 major projects; total invested capital amounted to 2.3 billion USD. Cooperations in other sectors such as telecommunications, tourism, energy, transportation… had also yielded fruitful results.
Two sides acknowledged that Vietnam and Myanmar has many similarities regarding history, cultures; both are member of ASEANS and sub-regional mechanisms; both are located in the dynamic Asia – Pacific regions and possess potentials and advantages in agriculture, energy, mineral extraction, tourism…Therefore, two sides have favorable conditions to further develop the bilateral relation.

Admitting difficulties in expanding cooperation due to different mechanisms, laws and regulations, both sides proposed several initiatives, including establishing an annual dialogue mechanism between Myanmar high-ranking leaders and Vietnamese enterprises, as well as between the two foreign ministries’ units to share professional experience and discuss ways to bolster bilateral ties.
On regional and global issues of mutual concern, Soe Han said the regional and global situation is developing complicatedly with uncertainties as world powers are competing for influence in Asia-Pacific. He suggested that ASEAN should enhance solidarity and step up the building of the ASEAN Community, affirming its position and central role in the regional architecture.
Vu spoke highly of Soe Han’s information about the recent Rakhine situation and the Myanmar government’s efforts in addressing the issue, adding that every solution should be considered thoroughly with humane approach as a centre.

Both sides highly valued the cooperation between the two foreign ministries over the past years, especially in arranging high-level visits and successfully holding cooperation mechanisms, including the ninth session of the Joint Committee for Bilateral Cooperation.
The eighth annual political consultation at the deputy ministerial level had been a success, greatly contributed to the Vietnam – Myanmar Comprehensive partnership as well as relation between the two MOFA. Both sides had also agreed to hold the ninth political annual consultation in 2020 at Myanmar.
