Malaysia-Vietnam: Sharing visions for a prosperous future

Malaysia and Vietnam entered a new phase of relations last year, with the elevation of our relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP). My greatest wish is for this milestone to serve as a springboard for even deeper collaboration and shared success.

Vietnamese traditional Tet is truly a celebration that embodies the soul of the country. It is a harmonious blend of tradition, family, and cultural richness. The festive atmosphere, from the preparation of bánh chưng to the beautifully decorated streets and the sense of renewal in the air, is deeply inspiring.

What strikes me the most is the strong emphasis on family reunions and paying homage to ancestors - values that are equally cherished in Malaysia. My family and I have been fortunate to experience the festive Tet atmosphere here in Hanoi, and we look forward to doing the same again this year!

The spirit of Tet is all about renewal, optimism, and looking ahead with hope, which makes this a perfect moment to reflect on the aspirations for our bilateral relations. Malaysia and Vietnam entered a new phase of relations last year, with the elevation of our relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP). My greatest wish is for this milestone to serve as a springboard for even deeper collaboration and shared success.

Under the CSP framework, we aspire to deepen political trust and enhance defense and security cooperation. This includes regular high-level exchanges and the effective utilization of existing mechanisms, as well as exploring new avenues for collaboration to address emerging challenges. Such efforts will contribute to a peaceful and stable environment conducive to development in both nations.

Economically, our goal is to boost bilateral trade and investment, striving towards a target of USD 18 billion by 2025. We aim to improve market access for key export products, including agriculture, aquaculture, Halal products, and electronic components. Additionally, we seek to facilitate the expansion of investments in high-potential areas such as automation, smart logistics, innovation, high technology, digital economy, and digital transformation.

Strengthening people-to-people connections will also be a focus for us and we intend to continue building on this through cultural exchanges, educational collaborations, and tourism.

On a broader scale, both nations are committed to working closely within multilateral frameworks, particularly ASEAN, to promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the region. This includes upholding international law, ensuring freedom of navigation, and contributing to the development of a resilient and united ASEAN Community.

Vietnam is undoubtedly emerging as a dynamic and influential player, not only within ASEAN but also on the global stage. Its remarkable economic growth, strategic geographic location, and proactive engagement in regional and international affairs highlight Vietnam’s rising prominence. The country’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and inclusive development is commendable, as it lays a strong foundation for long-term progress.

Vietnam’s new development aspirations, including its goal of becoming a high-income country by 2045, reflect a bold vision and a clear determination to advance. The focus on digital transformation, green growth, and global integration aligns perfectly with the trends shaping the modern world. Vietnam’s active contributions to regional stability, trade, and multilateral cooperation further solidify its position as a key driver of development in ASEAN and beyond.

In the ASEAN context, this year is a significant year for both Malaysia and Vietnam. Malaysia is the Chair of ASEAN for 2025, and Vietnam will be celebrating 30 years of membership in ASEAN. As a close friend and partner, Malaysia deeply values Vietnam’s contributions and shares in its vision for a prosperous future. We see great potential for collaboration in achieving our shared goals, from fostering innovation to addressing climate challenges. I am confident that Vietnam’s dedication and resilience will continue to propel it forward into this promising new era.

Finally, as we celebrate Tet, I extend my heartfelt wishes for peace, prosperity, and happiness to the people of Vietnam and Malaysia. May our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership bring about shared success and a brighter future for both our nations.

Chúc mừng năm mới!
