At the invitation of Prime Minister Le Minh Hung, Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae will pay an official visit to Vietnam from May 1-3, 2026.
This marks Ms. Takaichi's first visit to Vietnam since assuming office in October 2025.
Born in 1961, Ms. Takaichi is the first female Prime Minister in Japan's history. She holds a bachelor's degree in business from Kobe University and has previously served as Minister in charge of Internal Affairs, communications, economic security, science policy, technology, space, and intellectual property.
Diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Japan were established in 1973, and they became comprehensive strategic partners in 2023. Japan is the largest ODA donor, the largest labour cooperation partner, the third-largest investor, and the fourth-largest tourism and trade partner of Vietnam.
The import-export turnover between Vietnam and Japan reached over 51.43 billion USD in 2025. According to the Japanese Embassy in Vietnam, bilateral trade in the first quarter of 2026 increased by 12.7% compared to the same period last year, with expectations to reach 60 billion USD by 2027.
