Following the success of the EVSDA Awards launch in May 2025 – an event marking the EU's strong commitment to accompanying Vietnam on its journey towards sustainable development – this year's awards honored 20 outstanding groups of authors. Their works are seen as compelling models, demonstrating how creativity can lead environmental responsibility, adaptability, and the creation of lasting values.

This year's award theme drew inspiration from natural elements that are the main symbols in the EU's strategic communication campaign, including: Wind representing creativity and uniqueness; Water representing adaptability and applicability in life; and the Sun representing sustainability & long-term value.

This approach not only connects professional criteria but also helps the public understand how design can contribute to addressing climate change challenges while enhancing daily life quality.

The ceremony was attended by leaders of the EU Delegation to Vietnam, representatives of EU member states, cultural organizations, international and Vietnamese design experts, as well as the community of designers pursuing sustainable thinking.

In the event space, the Exhibition area displayed 79 finalist works across four categories: Architecture, Product Design, Communication Design, and Breakthrough Initiatives – not only honoring the aesthetics of the designs but also conveying the message that design can be a driving force for significant societal changes.

Each category selected one outstanding project to receive the Special Prize. The four winning designers will receive an award of a one-week residency in a European country, supported by the embassies of the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Italy.

The Grand Prize of this year's season in the Breakthrough Initiatives category was awarded to the project "Development of Compressed Stabilized Earth Blocks – Green Self-Interlocking" by the team of Nguyen Van Tuan, Nguyen Trung Hieu, Nguyen Quoc Dinh, Nguyen Duy Thanh, Dirk Schwede (TH Lübeck), and Nathalie Fagel. The project aims to develop environmentally friendly housing, utilizing local materials and resources, thereby contributing to Vietnam's net-zero emissions goal.

In other categories, the Special Prize for Architecture was awarded to the Nha Chau Dat project by NAQI & Partners; the Product Design category honoured the TAM (not-permanent) project by Trang Nguyen; while Communication Design made its mark with Voice Games: 1000 Year Archive by Trung Bao and Harry Yeff. Additionally, many other projects were highly rated and classified as excellent in each category.

Besides the main awards, EVSDA 2025 also presented the Emerging Designer Award and the Audience Choice Award to encourage participation, interaction, and the spread of sustainable creative spirit within the community. This year's jury comprised esteemed experts from Vietnam and Europe, representing pioneering thinking in the design field.

The event affirmed the EU's commitment to accompanying Vietnam on its green transition journey through multicultural cooperation, human resource development, and the promotion of sustainable industries, in line with the EU–Vietnam Cooperation and Partnership Agreements, as well as the Global Gateway Strategy.

Speaking on the significance of the event, EU Ambassador to Vietnam Julien Guerrier shared: “Through the Global Gateway Strategy, the EU is strongly committed to cooperating with Vietnam on the green transition journey – not only in energy, infrastructure, or policy sectors but also in the cultural and creative industries.

Because sustainable development is not just a technological challenge, it is a societal transformation. A journey that requires us to reshape habits, reimagine spaces, redesign products, and redefine lifestyles.”

He added: “In this regard, the Vietnamese design community is transforming impressively. We are witnessing more environmentally friendly approaches, clearer circular thinking, bold experiments with local materials, and a readiness to jointly address climate and social issues through design.”

The EU–Vietnam Sustainable Design Awards (EVSDA) were established to honour outstanding Vietnamese designers who use the power of creativity to promote green living, sustainable consumption, and harmonious development with the environment.

Through professional evaluation, public engagement, and international collaborations, EVSDA 2025 affirms the role of creativity as a crucial driver for sustainable development in Vietnam. At the same time, the Awards serve as a bridge linking European and Vietnamese values, highlighting ideas and creative communities contributing to shaping a more sustainable future for Vietnam.

From trade and infrastructure foundations, EU–Vietnam cooperation within the Global Gateway Strategy framework has expanded into sustainable development, climate action, innovation, and design fields.

Through support programs under the Global Gateway Strategy, the EU accompanies Vietnam in transitioning to a low-carbon and circular economy, encompassing various fields from clean energy, green infrastructure to sustainable consumption and environmentally responsible design.

The EVSDA Awards are a specific part of this broader cooperation framework, aiming to honor Vietnamese designers with creative thinking linked to ecology, circular material applications, and solutions to adapt to climate change.
