As the first state visit of Republic of Korea President Lee Jae Myung to Vietnam in his new role, following the completion of the leadership apparatus by the 16th National Assembly of Vietnam, the visit is expected to further solidify political trust between the two Comprehensive Strategic Partners. It also aims to boost economic, trade, investment, science and technology cooperation, and development collaboration to new heights, in line with bilateral needs and interests.

On this occasion, EVN engaged in discussions and promoted strategic cooperation with Republic of Korea partners in the energy sector, contributing to the realization of bilateral cooperation commitments.

Expanding cooperation in technology, storage, transmission, and new power development

On the morning of April 22, in Hanoi, EVN General Director Nguyen Anh Tuan met and worked with Kim Tae Min, Vice President of the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO).

During the meeting, the two sides discussed the EVN – KEPCO cooperation situation in recent times and the direction for future collaboration based on a new memorandum of understanding. The content focused on technology application in power plants, high-capacity transmission solutions, energy storage systems (BESS), financial pressure management experience, as well as potential cooperation in nuclear power and energy transition.

On the EVN side, General Director Nguyen Anh Tuan expressed interest in technologies for managing and operating the power system, such as battery storage system management (BESS), underground cable fault detection, and high-voltage direct current transmission...

According to the Group's leadership, EVN is researching the development of energy storage systems while consulting with competent authorities to establish mechanisms and policies for this field.

EVN leaders expressed a desire for KEPCO to continue sharing experiences and consider investment opportunities in the energy storage sector, contributing to financial arrangements for new projects.

The two sides also agreed to enhance in-depth exchanges and leverage the existing cooperation foundation to improve coordination efficiency in the future.

Establishing a new cooperation framework

Another significant achievement for EVN during President Lee Jae Myung's visit was the establishment of a new cooperation framework with Hyosung Heavy Industries Corporation. The signing ceremony of the memorandum of understanding (MOU) took place on the afternoon of April 22 in Hanoi, with the participation of leaders from both sides.

Within the cooperation framework, the two sides identified three main pillars: implementing advanced grid asset management solutions to enhance operational efficiency and system reliability; collaborating on research, transfer, and mastery of STATCOM technology, contributing to voltage stability and power quality improvement; and strengthening training and human resource development, especially at Dong Anh Electrical Equipment Corporation, thereby promoting localization and development of the domestic power industry.

At the signing ceremony, EVN Chairman Dang Hoang An shared that EVN highly values the cooperation with Hyosung Heavy Industries Corporation and appreciates the continued signing of a new memorandum of understanding based on the positive results from the agreement signed in August 2025. This reflects trust and a long-term commitment towards sustainable development of Vietnam's power sector.

Dang Hoang An stated that to meet economic growth targets, EVN is implementing a development investment program for power sources and grids with a scale of about USD 5 billion annually. The focus is on developing smart grids, promoting digital transformation towards a digital enterprise by 2030, while developing renewable energy, promoting energy transition, and increasing the localization rate of electrical equipment.

“The signing of the memorandum of understanding not only signifies technical cooperation but also demonstrates a commitment to collaboration and knowledge sharing between the two sides in the modernization of Vietnam's power sector. EVN will facilitate the effective implementation of cooperation content, contributing to ensuring power system security and sustainable development,” emphasized Dang Hoang An.
