Dong Nai southern province reaches 70% completion in housing support programme

The southern province of Dong Nai has completed and handed over 226 homes—nearly 70% of its target—under the 2025 programme to eliminate makeshift and dilapidated houses, according to a review conference held on May 28.

The programme, led by the provincial Steering Committee, is being implemented in two phases. Phase one covers 246 homes, including 117 new units and 129 repairs. Phase two targets an additional 191 homes.

To date, construction has begun on 326 houses. These include 24 for revolutionary contributors and families of war martyrs, 199 for poor and near-poor households, and 103 supported independently by local communities outside the provincial plan. Total funding has exceeded 14 billion VND (around 550,000 USD).

At the conference, officials highlighted both progress and ongoing challenges. The main obstacle is the lack of legal land use rights among 44 poor or near-poor households, which complicates the legal procedures needed for housing assistance.

Vo Tan Duc, Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee and deputy head of the Steering Committee, urged local authorities to fast-track the second phase for completion by June 20 and to finalise the programme review by June 25.

He also called for solutions to legal land issues, the consideration of prefabricated housing for affected households, and stronger oversight to ensure transparency, accurate targeting, and prevention of corruption or inefficiency.
