Vietnamese Ambassador to the U.S. Nguyen Quoc Dung, one of the overseas delegates attending the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam, held from January 19-25, 2026, shared in-depth assessments of the significant achievements in Vietnam's foreign affairs during the 2020–2025 term, as well as expectations for strategic directions and important policies of the Congress in the new development phase of the country.
According to Ambassador Nguyen Quoc Dung, during the 2020–2025 period, global challenges such as pandemics, wars, natural disasters, and strategic competition posed significant challenges for all countries. Nations were like ships navigating through stormy seas.
Despite these challenges, Vietnam has continued to develop robustly; the country's potential and position have been strengthened, and the people's lives have become increasingly prosperous and happy. A significant contribution to these achievements has been the foreign affairs efforts. The Party's foreign policy has been implemented across three pillars: Party diplomacy, state diplomacy, and people-to-people diplomacy.
The Ambassador emphasized that over the past five years, foreign affairs have achieved significant milestones. First, maintaining a peaceful and stable international and regional environment. Second, strengthening friendships and partnerships without creating adversaries. Third, robust integration, attracting and leveraging external resources for development (expanding markets, attracting investment, science and technology, and human resource training). Fourth, enhancing Vietnam's confident and resilient image, contributing positively to global affairs.
Assessing Vietnam's position, prestige, and role on the international stage as the country continuously upgraded relations with major nations during the 2020–2025 period, including establishing a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with the U.S., Ambassador Nguyễn Quốc Dũng affirmed that relationships are inherently two-way or multi-way and cannot be formed based on unilateral desires.
"The proactive upgrading of relations with Vietnam by countries, especially leading powers, clearly demonstrates Vietnam's growing stature and prestige on the international stage. These milestones not only bring bilateral benefits but also contribute practically to the common goal of global peace, cooperation, and development. It can be affirmed that this is an objective recognition of Vietnam's pivotal role in the current global security and economic structure," emphasized Ambassador Nguyen Quoc Dung.
According to the Ambassador, regarding Vietnam-U.S. relations, the 50-year journey post-war and 30 years of normalization have written a new, impressive chapter. From confrontation, the two nations have closed the past to gradually become Comprehensive Partners, then Comprehensive Strategic Partners, becoming a model of reconciliation in international relations based on mutual respect for independence, sovereignty, and political institutions. The reality has demonstrated the importance of this relationship: Vietnam is now a priority destination for most major U.S. corporations, the eighth-largest trading partner of Washington, and leads Southeast Asia in the number of students studying in the U.S.
Expressing expectations for breakthrough policies at the 14th Party Congress aimed at realizing the goal of making the nation prosperous by 2045, Ambassador Nguyen Quoc Dung emphasized three key strategic directions.
First, the Ambassador affirmed that human factors are always decisive. He highly appreciated the excellent qualities and capabilities of the Vietnamese people, hoping that the Party's policies will focus on creating the most favorable conditions to awaken and maximize this precious resource.
Second, the Ambassador hopes the Party will make breakthroughs in institutional improvement, creating a modern environment for development.
Third, the Ambassador emphasized the importance of a correct and wise foreign policy that firmly protects national and ethnic interests while positively contributing to maintaining peace, stability, and promoting cooperation trends worldwide.
With his work experience and connection with the Vietnamese community in the U.S., sharing the expectations and beliefs of Vietnamese expatriates in the U.S. regarding the 14th Party Congress, Ambassador Nguyen Quoc Dung emphasized that regardless of being Vietnamese or of Vietnamese origin, wherever they are, there is a desire for a strong, independent, and prosperous Vietnam, standing shoulder to shoulder with world powers, as President Ho Chi Minh always wished. This is the common pride of the entire nation. What the Party and State have accomplished over the decades and the achievements attained are the basis for confidence in the Party's correct path. Each congress marks a new milestone, creating new momentum for the country's development.
Similarly, the Vietnamese community in the U.S. expects the 14th Congress to create new breakthroughs to promote national unity, whereby all Vietnamese people enthusiastically join hands to lead the country into a new era, the era of Vietnam's rise.
