Former Deputy Foreign Minister, Vietnamese Ambassador to Cambodia from 2014-2017, Thach Du shares his insights on the 40-year journey of national renovation, as well as his faith and expectations for the 14th National Congress of the Party.
Ambassador, after 40 years of implementing the renovation process under the Party's leadership, our country has achieved significant accomplishments in various fields. How do you recognize and evaluate these important achievements in our renovation journey?
Reflecting on the 40-year renovation journey, it's a particularly significant historical phase, closely linked with the wise leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam and the persistent efforts of the entire nation in building and defending the country. The renovation process was initiated at the Party's 6th Congress in 1986, stemming from the objective needs of the country's realities.
With the spirit of “looking straight at the truth, speaking the truth, and evaluating the truth correctly”, our Party courageously renewed its thinking, starting with economic thinking to implement a socialist-oriented market mechanism, thereby opening a historical turning point for the country's development.
After 40 years of persistent and creative renovation, Vietnam has achieved tremendous, historically significant accomplishments. From a centrally planned, underdeveloped economy, Vietnam has risen to become a developing nation with a progressively perfected socialist-oriented market economy, deeply and effectively integrating into the international community.
The national economy has experienced continuous growth, with its scale constantly expanding; the economic structure has positively shifted; and the material and spiritual life of the people has markedly improved. The poverty rate has significantly decreased; education, healthcare, science and technology, culture, and society have seen comprehensive development. Social justice and social welfare are increasingly prioritized and ensured.
Alongside economic development, political and social stability, national defense and security are maintained, and national sovereignty is ensured. The Party building and political system are continuously strengthened; the people's trust in the Party and the State continues to be reinforced.
Notably, after 40 years of renovation, Vietnam's position and prestige on the international stage have been increasingly elevated. Vietnam is a friend, a reliable partner, and an active, responsible member of the international community; it is increasingly participating in regional and global institutions. Foreign affairs and international integration are among the Party's standout achievements, effectively playing a pioneering role, contributing to maintaining a peaceful and stable environment, and opening up unprecedented development and stability for the country.
The achievements of the country from the 40-year renovation process must be affirmed as the crystallization of the independent, self-reliant will, the spirit of solidarity, and the creativity of the entire nation; they are vivid evidence of the Party's correct renovation path, suitable to Vietnam's realities and the development trends of the era.

In your view, what remarkable achievements has Vinh Long province made in the 40-year renovation journey within the country's overall development?
As a native of Vinh Long, I am very proud and delighted with the changes in the local socio-economic fields. Under the leadership and support of the Central Government, the Vinh Long Provincial Party Committee has thoroughly grasped and continuously strived, along with various social classes, to unite and jointly implement the construction and renovation of the homeland, making it more prosperous and beautiful.
In the renovation process, all three provinces of Vinh Long, Tra Vinh, and Ben Tre have nearly completely transformed in various aspects of social life. Tra Vinh, from a poor province in the Mekong Delta, has risen to become the first province in the region to complete the task of building new rural areas. Vinh Long province has continuously made strong progress in industrial development. Ben Tre province, from a purely agricultural economy, has made remarkable progress to become a locality with advanced agricultural production, developing handicrafts, and eco-tourism...
After the merger, Vinh Long province is poised for a stronger breakthrough thanks to its vast development space, numerous potentials, and advantages in agriculture, industry, commerce, tourism, and especially marine economy.
With over 130 km of coastline, Vinh Long is not only enriching itself through aquaculture but is also forming and continuing to rise to become the clean energy center of the Mekong Delta and the entire country.
I am confident that under the Party's leadership in the new era of the country, the Vinh Long Provincial Party Committee and people will continue to steadfastly and creatively innovate, achieving even greater accomplishments.
As the 14th National Congress of the Party approaches, what are your wishes and expectations for the Party and State leadership in the new development phase of the country?
Like the various social classes across the country, I place complete trust in the leadership and renovation, development path of the Party and the State. The social classes are looking towards the 14th National Congress of the Party with many great hopes and expectations.
I believe that the new Central Committee of the Party will propose strategic decisions that are beneficial to the nation and the people, elevating Vietnam to stand alongside international friends in all aspects of life.
In recent times, the Politburo has issued many important resolutions; among them are Resolutions 57-NQ/TW dated December 22, 2024; Resolution No. 71-NQ/TW, dated August 22, 2025; Resolution No. 68-NQ/TW dated May 4, 2025; Resolution No. 72-NQ/TW dated September 9, 2025, on the development of science and technology and digital transformation, education and training, private economic development, and strengthening the protection, care, and improvement of people's health. These are important resolutions that meet the development trends of the country in the new phase.
The social classes hope that the Central Committee of the Party will continue to pay attention and propose comprehensive solutions to promote comprehensive development in fields such as education and training, healthcare, and the national economy in general, and the Mekong Delta region in particular, including Vinh Long province.
Improving people's health, enhancing the quality of human resources, and promoting economic development are considered closely linked pillars, positively impacting each other in the process of innovative development, green economy, and circular economy, thereby creating momentum for the country to rise strongly in the new era.
