Vietnam’s wushu champion aims for further glory

As the top fighter in the 60kg category in wushu, Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy will head to Thailand this winter to fight for SEA Games gold.

Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy secured a silver medal in the women’s 60kg wushu event at the 2025 World Games, currently taking place in Chengdu, China. She became the first Vietnamese athlete to claim a medal at the international multi-sport festival, which features disciplines not contested at the Olympics.

The result adds motivation for Thuy to defend her title of wushu at the upcoming SEA Games in Thailand this December.

Discovered at age 10 and recruited to the Bac Giang (now Bac Ninh) team in 2008, Thuy has since become one of Vietnam’s most consistent medal hopes, with numerous titles from regional, continental and world competitions. Her career highlight came in 2023, when she defeated Indian rival Naorem Roshibina Devi to win her second world championship, after earning silver in 2019.

“In martial arts, the line between victory and defeat is very thin. I have enjoyed many wins but also suffered losses. I always review my matches, identify mistakes, and improve my skills”, she said, affirming her determination to keep pursuing success on the international stage.
