Vietnam has constantly improved legal policies, economic stability, and social security assurance for people, especially vulnerable groups, which are most visible during the recent COVID-19 pandemic. This practice is also a proactive, active and effective participation of Vietnam in UN activities, contributing to efforts to protect human rights around the world.
Notebly, during its tenure of a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council 2020-2021, Vietnam has always promoted the spirit of humanity, compassion, towards the people, strengthened humanitarian actions, and protection of civilians in and post-conflict.
It is also the fact that Vietnam has sent officials to join the UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan and the Central African Republic, in an effort to bring a safe and stable life to people in unstable countries and regions.
Since the establishment of the UN Human Rights Council, Vietnam has always actively and responsibly participated in its activities. In which, Vietnam successfully assumed the role of a member of the UN Security Council for the 2014-2016 term; participating in promoting initiatives, showing their mark and being highly appreciated by the international community.
By seriously implementing the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), the most important mechanism of the UN Human Rights Council, Vietnam has provided comprehensive information and truthfully reflected its efforts and commitments to ensure human rights, demonstrating its responsibility of a member state in realizing of international commitments.
Vietnam regularly maintains bilateral human rights dialogue mechanisms with a number of countries, being ready to provide and exchange issues of mutual concern in the spirit of frankness, openness and mutual respect. At all forums, Vietnam always advocates to attach importance to dialogue and cooperation with other countries and partners in the protection and promotion of human rights.

On September 22, at the regular press conference, responding to unfair and biased, controversial opinions on Vietnam's candidacy for the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), the Foreign Ministry’s Spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang affirmed: “We completely reject the untruthful, unobjective contents with bad prejudices that some foreign organisations have raised about the situation in Vietnam”.
“Vietnam’s consistent policy of protecting and promoting human rights has been specified in the 2013 Constitution and many other legal documents, the spokesperson stated, adding that the country's efforts and achievements in the work have been recognised and appreciated by the international community.”
Vietnam's candidacy for the UN Human Rights Council not only affirms Vietnam's efforts, commitments and achievements as well as its ability to contribute to the protection and promotion of human rights, but also creates an opportunity for Vietnam to continue promoting specific initiatives, raising the status and image of a proactive and actively integrating Vietnam, a responsible member of the international community.
