According to Deputy Minister Nguyen Manh Cuong, the ASEAN Future Forum is an initiative by the Government of Vietnam announced at the 2023 ASEAN Summit. It aims to create a framework for ASEAN leaders, partners, scholars, and international businesses to exchange and propose initiatives contributing to shaping ASEAN's future, while also supporting ASEAN's official processes.

After two editions in 2024 and 2025, the AFF has gradually affirmed its role as an open, future-oriented forum, garnering widespread attention and support from ASEAN countries and the international community. Many topics and initiatives discussed at the Forum have been included in the documents of the ASEAN Summits in the same year.

AFF 2026 takes place as ASEAN is implementing the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 and strategic plans to build a resilient, dynamic, innovative, and people-centered community. The forum is expected to gather senior leaders from Vietnam, some ASEAN member countries, and representatives from international organizations, research institutes, businesses, and local and international communities.

The official AFF 2026 reception will be held in the evening.

The opening session of AFF 2026 is scheduled for the morning of June 9 in Hanoi, with the participation of key leaders from the Party and State of Vietnam and senior leaders from some ASEAN countries. The plenary sessions throughout the day will focus on ASEAN resilience and solidarity, promoting conflict prevention initiatives, and AI applications in ASEAN.
