Vietnam, EAEU seek to unlock greater potential for trade and investment cooperation

At the meeting, the Vice President spoke highly of the role played by the Eurasian Economic Commission and Chairman Bakytzhan Sagintayev in promoting the implementation of commitments under the Vietnam-Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in recent years. She affirmed the need to make better use of the Vietnam-EAEU FTA and promote trade and investment, thereby delivering tangible benefits to people and businesses on both sides.

On that basis, Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan proposed that the two sides continue studying the upgrading and revision of the Agreement to bring it in line with the new situation, meet the cooperation needs and economic potential of Vietnam and the EAEU, and ensure balanced benefits for all parties.

She also expressed the hope that the EAEU would remove trade barriers related to safeguard measures, particularly those affecting textiles and garments, footwear and rice.

Chairman of the Eurasian Economic Commission Bakytzhan Sagintayev welcomed the fact that bilateral trade between Vietnam and the EAEU had doubled, while stressing that considerable room and potential remained for further development.

He called for stronger exchanges and the reconciliation of trade statistics to address existing bottlenecks, as well as the early convening of a session of the Joint Commission and the signing of a Protocol on electronic certification of origin.

Appreciating and taking note of the specific proposals put forward by Chairman Bakytzhan Sagintayev, Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan shared that Vietnam’s leaders, particularly Party General Secretary and State President To Lam, attach great importance to implementing international agreements and commitments.

She said Vietnam is currently pursuing a new development model and proposed that the two sides expand their cooperation into high-tech fields such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence and energy transition.

The EAEU is one of Vietnam’s important trading partners. After 10 years of implementing the Agreement, bilateral trade between Vietnam and the EAEU grew by nearly 30% annually in 2017-2018 and almost doubled in 2025 compared with 2016.
