The session was chaired by Colombia's Foreign Minister Rosa Yolanda Villavicencio, representing the President of the Security Council for June 2026, and attracted speeches from many United Nations member states.
During the discussion, Sima Bahous, Executive Director of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), highlighted that gender equality and women's empowerment are among the most effective approaches to achieving sustainable peace.
Many countries expressed concern that although women are the most heavily affected by conflicts, they are still underrepresented in peace processes. They called for ensuring women's participation in negotiation, reconciliation, and post-conflict reconstruction stages, as well as increasing resources for women-led organizations and initiatives.
Speaking at the discussion, Permanent Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Minh Vu emphasized that peace agreements can end wars, but sustainable peace must be built from families, communities, institutions, and economies, where women are indispensable actors.

Deputy Minister Nguyen Minh Vu stressed that the Women, Peace, and Security agenda has always been a priority for Vietnam, from the Security Council Resolution 1889 on the role of women in post-conflict contexts promoted by Vietnam in 2009, to the first National Action Plan on Women, Peace, and Security in 2024, and numerous policies enhancing women's participation in political, economic, and social life.
Deputy Minister Nguyen Minh Vu affirmed that women should not only be seen as victims in conflicts but also as peacebuilders and architects of a more sustainable and inclusive future.
From this perspective, the Deputy Minister called on the international community to promote the full, equal, and meaningful participation of women in peace negotiations and decision-making processes; to increase investment in health, education, and economic empowerment for women in post-conflict contexts; to support women-led peacebuilding, reconciliation, and community initiatives; and to empower women in new areas such as digital transformation, STEM education, and climate change adaptation.

On the same day, Permanent Deputy Minister Nguyen Minh Vu also delivered a speech at the session on humanitarian issues of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
The Deputy Minister affirmed that humanitarian activities should be conducted based on respect for the United Nations Charter and international humanitarian law, respecting sovereignty, territorial integrity, protecting civilians, and ensuring safe humanitarian access.
The Deputy Minister stressed that Vietnam is always ready to contribute to the common humanitarian efforts of the international community. Despite being heavily affected by natural disasters and climate change, Vietnam actively participates in the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF), United Nations peacekeeping operations, ASEAN cooperation on disaster management, and dispatches rescue and humanitarian support teams to countries facing natural disasters and crises. Through this, he called for turning the spirit of solidarity into concrete actions, ensuring that humanitarian efforts remain at the center of all response efforts.
