Vietjet, CFM International partner to develop maintenance capabilities for latest-generation engines in Vietnam

WVR - On September 10, during the official visit to France by General Secretary and President To Lam, CFM International and Vietjet signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) to collaborate on researching and assessing the potential development of maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) capabilities for CFM LEAP engines in Vietnam.

According to the Letter of Intent, CFM plans to propose a consultancy agreement to support Vietjet in comprehensively assessing engine maintenance needs, technical capabilities, infrastructure, equipment, human resources, and necessary conditions to consider developing MRO solutions for LEAP engines in Vietnam.

This is a strategically significant step as Vietjet expands its new-generation fleet on a large scale. The research into forming LEAP engine MRO capabilities in the future not only serves the airline's long-term operational needs but also opens up opportunities to develop a high-tech aviation industry sector in Vietnam, train internationally qualified engineers, and gradually elevate Vietnam's position in the global aviation value chain.

Gaël Méheust, President and CEO of CFM International, stated: “Vietnam is one of the most dynamic aviation markets in the world. We are pleased to continue strengthening our successful partnership with Vietjet through assessing the potential for developing engine maintenance capabilities in Vietnam. CFM will leverage its global experience to provide Vietjet with a comprehensive assessment, contributing to supporting the long-term and sustainable development vision of Vietnam's aviation industry.”

Nguyen Thanh Son, CEO of Vietjet, shared: “A strong aviation industry not only requires a modern fleet and extensive flight network but also the capability to master technology, engineering, and high-quality human resources.

Collaboration with CFM is a crucial step in Vietjet's strategy to build a comprehensive aviation ecosystem in Vietnam. We expect this initiative to lay the foundation for developing the latest generation engine maintenance capabilities, training internationally qualified engineers, and increasingly integrating Vietnam into the global aviation value chain.”

CFM International has been partnering with Vietjet since 2014, when the airline received its first Airbus A320ceo aircraft equipped with CFM56 engines. Currently, Vietjet operates 50 Airbus A320ceo and A321ceo aircraft equipped with CFM56-5B engines. The relationship between the two parties is entering a new phase with Vietjet's program for 200 Boeing 737-8 aircraft, including the 737-8 and 737-8-200 variants, using CFM LEAP-1B engines.
