The journey of studying abroad and the resilient spirit of young Vietnamese author Huynh Tu Uyen

WVR - On December 28, in Ho Chi Minh City, Fahasa Publishing Company organized a meet-and-greet event to launch the book “Viet cho nhung ngay khong dam khoc” by author Huynh Tu Uyen. The event attracted a large number of young readers, especially those who have studied abroad or are planning to work overseas.

The book Viet cho nhung ngay khong dam khoc is a collection of essays and memoirs documenting Huynh Tu Uyen's years of living, studying, and working in the United States.

From the initial bewilderment in the rainy, cold city of Tacoma, facing the alienation of being a “newcomer Vietnamese” to the setbacks, failures, and loneliness in a foreign land, the author gradually found spiritual support in libraries, music, kind relationships, and memories of home.

A notable aspect of Viet cho nhung ngay khong dam khoc is that it goes beyond personal storytelling, incorporating practical experiences for young people preparing to study abroad: from cultural adaptation, finding accommodation, part-time jobs, learning English, to maintaining mental health in a high-pressure environment.

These “little handbooks” are shared in a whispering, intimate tone, helping readers feel understood and accompanied.

At the meet-and-greet, author Huynh Tu Uyen confided that she wrote the book as a way to converse with her past self during her years abroad, while also sending a message to young people straddling two cultures. They may feel weak or fall, but they are not alone and can certainly rise to continue their journey.

“You may cry, you may fall for a moment, but you will definitely stand up. And you are not alone,” author Huynh Tu Uyen shared.

Viet cho nhung ngay khong dam khoc is Huynh Tu Uyen's debut book, licensed by the Literature Publishing House, co-published and distributed by Thai Ha Books in 2025.

With a gentle healing spirit, the work is expected to become a spiritual companion for many young Vietnamese on their path to studying abroad, integrating, and discovering their personal identity in a foreign land.
