On the occasion of Vietnam Book and Reading Culture Day (April 21), in the Truong Sa special zone – the frontier of the nation – a quiet yet meaningful beauty is being maintained and spread. This is the reading culture among officers, soldiers, and residents on the island.
The bookshelves on the island, though not large, are organized scientifically with a diverse range of genres such as politics, history, literature, science and technology, and life skills, meeting the reading needs of officers, soldiers, and residents.
In conditions where living standards are still limited, maintaining the habit of reading requires persistence and high awareness. After hours of training, patrolling, and guarding, the image of soldiers seizing moments to read has become familiar.
In Truong Sa, each book carries value far beyond its pages. It is a spiritual gift from the mainland, a message from the home front to the front line.
Books help enhance awareness, cultivate political courage, and nurture spiritual life, providing motivation to stand firm on the distant islands.
The reading culture is not only present within the Navy forces but also spreads throughout the civilian communities on the islands of the Truong Sa special zone. Families, especially children, increasingly have access to books through support programs from the mainland.
At schools, models like "friendly library corners" and "book houses for children" have been established, creating a close reading space that inspires a love for books.
For young children, each book opens up a new world, helping to nurture dreams and aspirations while forming reading habits – a crucial foundation for long-term development.
The reading culture in Truong Sa not only serves education and entertainment but also plays a significant role in building political courage, resilient spirit, and a healthy cultural life.
Books about history, the sea and islands, and national traditions help everyone to better understand, love, and take pride in the nation, thereby enhancing the responsibility to protect sovereignty.
At the same time, reading also helps balance spiritual life, mitigate the negative impacts of a closed environment, and maintain an optimistic and united spirit among officers, soldiers, and residents.
