At the invitation of General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam To Lam and his spouse, General Secretary of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party and President of the Lao People's Democratic Republic Thongloun Sisoulith and his spouse will pay a state visit to Vietnam from January 26 - 27, 2026.
The relationship between Vietnam and Laos has developed remarkably well in recent times. During General Secretary To Lam's state visit to Laos in December 2025, both sides agreed to deepen bilateral relations by adding a new dimension of “strategic connectivity”. This defines the Vietnam-Laos relationship as “Great Friendship, Special Solidarity, Comprehensive Cooperation, and Strategic Connectivity”.
In addition to strengthening cooperation in politics, defense, and security, both sides are also striving to elevate and create breakthroughs in economic cooperation.
Notably, this includes effectively implementing key projects that connect the two economies, such as transportation links including highways and railways; energy cooperation, trade, investment, high-quality human resource development, and building a sustainable supply chain.
Vietnam currently has 274 investment projects in Laos with a total registered capital of over 5.8 billion USD. Senior leaders of both countries have agreed to strive for a trade growth target of 5 billion USD, aiming for 10 billion USD in the coming years.
