Specifically, Ho Chi Minh City will receive 800 million doses while the rest will be sent to Bac Ninh and Bac Giang, Nguyen added.

Viet Nam is the first country in the Southeast Asian region to get vaccine donation from Japan, said Nguyen.

The aforesaid localities are the biggest COVID-19 hotspots with 7,320 community infection cases, accounting for more than 85% of the total domestic infections recorded since April 27 when the fourth COVID-19 wave broke out in Viet Nam.

While the COVID-19 outbreaks in Bac Giang and Bac Ninh have been gradually contained, the infection sources of several clusters in Ho Chi Minh City have yet been identified, prompting the southern metropolis to extend social distancing by another 14 days, starting from June 15.

Earlier, on June 15, Japanese Ambassador to Viet Nam Yamada Takio informed the donation during a meeting with Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.

On behalf of the Government and people of Viet Nam, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh extended sincere thanks to Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide, the Government and people of Japan for their valuable gift which reflects the friendship and mutual assistance between the two nations during this hard time.
