In May 2008, to commemorate the 118th anniversary of President Ho Chi Minh's birth and the 35th anniversary of Vietnam-Singapore diplomatic relations, the National Heritage Board of Singapore inaugurated the memorial plaque of President Ho Chi Minh within the grounds of the Asian Civilisations Museum.
Subsequently, friends of Vietnam at the National Heritage Board of Singapore, the Vietnamese Embassy in Singapore, and the Ho Chi Minh Museum conceived the idea of placing a statue of President Ho Chi Minh beside the memorial plaque. By September 2011, the statue of Ho Chi Minh placed next to the memorial plaque was inaugurated.
The Asian Civilisations Museum, located by the Singapore River, illustrates the historical connections between Asian cultures and between Asia and the world.
