Friendship Order conferred on Mr. Peter Jankowitsch and Austria–Vietnam Society

WVR - On July 20, the Vietnamese Embassy in Austria, in collaboration with the Vietnam-Austria Friendship Association, organized a ceremony to award the Friendship Order to Mr. Peter Jankowitsch, Honorary President of the Austria-Vietnam Society, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Austria-Vietnam Society for their active contributions in strengthening and developing the friendly relations between the people of Vietnam and Austria.

The ceremony was attended by representatives from the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Austrian Ambassador to Vietnam Philipp Agathonos, Vice President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, President of the Vietnam-Austria Friendship Association Tran Tuan Anh, President of the Austria-Vietnam Society Alfred Gerstel, former Austrian Ambassadors to Vietnam, and numerous Austrian friends and overseas Vietnamese.

Under authorization of the President, Ambassador Vu Le Thai Hoang awarded the Friendship Order to Mr. Peter Jankowitsch and the Austria-Vietnam Society. In his speech at the ceremony, Ambassador Vu Le Thai Hoang emphasized that the Friendship Order symbolizes the recognition by the State of Vietnam for over six decades of relentless efforts by Mr. Peter Jankowitsch for bilateral relations, and it is also a profound and respectful gratitude from the Vietnamese people to him.

In his role as Minister of Foreign Affairs and a sincere friend of Vietnam, he has supported the goals of peace, multilateral cooperation, and solidarity with Southern Hemisphere countries; supporting Vietnam at the United Nations and in Europe.

As President of the Austria-Vietnam Society (1998 - 2022), he contributed to enhancing relations between the two countries at both the state and people levels, supporting numerous humanitarian projects in Ho Chi Minh City and Ben Tre. The Ambassador also congratulated the Austria-Vietnam Society, which since its establishment in 1976, has accompanied the Vietnamese people in efforts against embargoes, promoting humanitarian projects, healing war wounds, supporting Agent Orange victims, and orphans in Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta.

Many generations of Austrian friends have devoted themselves to Vietnam, notably Mr. Georges Wächter (Ho Chi Tho), who lived and worked for ten years combating relapsing fever in Vietnam and was one of the few foreigners who was a close friend of President Ho Chi Minh.

Mr. Peter Jankowitsch expressed his emotion, honour, and sincere gratitude to the State and people of Vietnam for awarding him the prestigious Friendship Order and for the very good sentiments they have extended to him and the Austria-Vietnam Society over the years.

The image of the heroic Vietnamese nation and people in their struggle for national liberation, efforts against embargoes, has always inspired him and the Austria-Vietnam Society to take practical actions, calling for international friends and the Austrian people to help Vietnam overcome the consequences of war, support humanitarian projects for orphans, vocational training for women...

He also expressed his impression with Vietnam's socio-economic development achievements during the Doi Moi period and suggested that the Austria-Vietnam Society continue to closely coordinate with the Vietnam-Austria Friendship Association to promote people-to-people diplomacy, cooperation for development, towards the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 2027.
