This is the first official visit of a Slovenian Deputy Prime Minister to Vietnam since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1994, and as Foreign Minister, this is the second time since the visit to Vietnam in 2006 of the Slovenian Foreign Minister. This shows that Slovenia values and looks to further substantively promote relations with Vietnam.

Welcoming Slovenian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon, Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son affirmed that Vietnam attaches great importance to this visit of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Tanja Fajon. There has been no such official visit since 2006 although there have been high-level bilateral meetings on the sidelines of multilateral forums.

Sharing with the World and Vietnam Report, Vietnamese Ambassador to Austria and Slovenia Nguyen Trung Kien said that economic goals are the focus of this visit. Slovenia highly values economic cooperation in the context that Europe is facing many challenges such as intra-regional solidarity, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Accompanying Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon this time is a business delegation. Slovenia is also promoting Honorary Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City. Thereby, it can be seen that Slovenia wishes for new developments in economic and trade cooperation with Ho Chi Minh City, the economic locomotive of Vietnam.

Slovenia is more interested in Vietnam, shown by the rapid progress in bilateral cooperation, for example, the two-way trade turnover between Vietnam and Slovenia in 2023 is 573 million USD, an increase of about 40% compared with the year 2022.

Slovenia has strengths in products with high technology content, which can help Vietnam increase product quality, thereby exporting it back to Europe and other major markets such as China, the US, ect. Slovenia has nuclear technology for civil service which has been very developed, along with other strengths such as clean energy. These are the areas the two sides can cooperate.

Besides, Slovenia has a labor demand that Vietnam can meet. Slovenia needs skilled workers, for example in the service, kitchen, and beauty care industries.

On this occasion, Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son and Slovenian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the two Foreign Ministries.
