He made the statement at the year-end review conference of EVN, held in Hanoi on January 6.
As nuclear power is a stable, environmentally-friendly and sustainable energy source, developing this energy will diversify Vietnam’s energy supply, according to Tuan, ensuring energy security and contributing to achieving the carbon neutrality target by 2050.
In Directive 01, issued on January 3, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chính instructed the Minister of Industry and Trade to oversee the implementation and completion of the Ninh Thuan nuclear power plants within five years.
With the GDP growth target of 8% this year, electricity generation must increase by one and a half times, meaning an additional 8,000–10,000 megawatts (MW) must be added to the national electricity system, Tuan said.
Therefore, EVN proposes that the Prime Minister continue to assign the corporation as the main investor in new power generation projects, alongside the Ninh Thuan nuclear plants,” he said.
“We also requests support from the Prime Minister, ministries and local authorities to expedite urgent projects, shorten preparation and construction times, and quickly increase electricity supply to the northern region.
The locations for the Ninh Thuan 1 and 2 nuclear power plants have been decided. They will, after careful surveys and evaluations, be in the Phuoc Dinh and Vinh Hai communes, Tuan added.
