In partnership with Nike Vietnam and Danson Solutions, the Vietnam Institute of Educational Sciences hosted the closing seminar for Active With Sports, a five-year project to developing Physical Education in primary schools across Vietnam.
The event marks the culmination a five-year journey to successfully implement the 6C’s of Coaching with teachers and staff in primary schools to help all children move more through play and sport. With this coaching strategy, the Active With Sports program has significantly contributed to the sustainable development of PE teaching methods under Vietnam's 2018 General Education Curriculum, positively impacting millions of primary school students nationwide.
Recognizing that kids with access to sport and positive coaches are healthier, happier and more successful – both in school and in life – Nike Vietnam launched the Active with Sports initiative in Ho Chi Minh City in 2016 and Hanoi in 2017.
In 2020, the initiative developed into an official collaboration framework with the Vietnam Institute of Educational Sciences, receiving strong support and engagement from educational authorities, schools, teachers, students and parents, under the project name "Developing Physical Education in Primary Schools in Vietnam."
Experts from the Vietnam Institute of Educational Sciences, partnering with Nike Vietnam and Danson Solutions, created a 6C’s of Coaching instructional guide for primary school Physical Education classes. This success led to a significant milestone in 2022: a tripartite MOU between VNIES, Nike Vietnam and Danson Solutions to roll out the 6C Strategy nationwide.
Over five years (2020 to 2025), the 6C’s of Coaching directly trained around 1,000 primary Physical Education core teachers nationally through 13 training sessions, establishing the 6C’s of Coaching as a key approach for implementing the 2018 Physical Education curriculum in 63 provinces and cities across the country.
The significant advantages of this coaching strategy, its curriculum alignment, adaptability and practical flexibility have led to its adoption by over 21,000 PE teachers, currently impacting more than 7 million students nationwide.
This has significantly improved PE teaching and learning, aligned with Vietnam’s national 2018 curriculum, while promoting student engagement and building a solid foundation for the growth of their physical, mental and social skills.
Applied flexibly and creatively to Physical Education classes, this coaching strategy has helped teachers design dynamic, engaging, student-centered physical education classes.

The 6C’s of Coaching consists of six key principles, including: Confidence, Contribution, Connection, Clear/Concise, Choice and Celebration. This approach has been successfully implemented in other countries because of its flexibility and high level of engagement – inspiring students, and encouraging them to be more confident learning new physical skills in their Physical Education classes.
In Asia, in addition to Vietnam, Nike has also incorporated the 6C’s Coaching into a similar “Active Schools” initiative in many primary schools in China.
The goal of all partners is for the positive outcomes of the Active with Sports project to be sustained, broadened, and systematically integrated into future Physical Education teaching in Vietnam.
Prof. Dr. Le Anh Vinh, Director of the Vietnam Institute of Educational Sciences, shared: “The achievements from the project are a crucial foundation for us to continue improving and developing specialized resources to support PE teachers in designing and implementing effective PE lessons that align with current educational innovations. PE lessons not only help students improve their physical fitness and motor skills but also play a vital role in shaping a healthy lifestyle, discipline, and self-confidence.
Currently, as the education sector promotes the concept of two-session schooling per day and enhances comprehensive education at all levels, the Vietnam Institute of Educational Sciences will continue to research, refine the content of the materials, and expand the scope of implementing the 6Cs strategy for the next educational levels.”
The Active With Sports program is a collaborative effort between the Vietnam Institute of Educational Sciences (VIES), Nike, and Danson Solutions, aimed at powering the future of youth sport, by training primary school staff and teachers in positive coaching techniques to engage all students through play and sport. The program successfully initiated a pilot module using the 6C’s of Coaching; implemented training; and integrated the coach training techniques into Physical Education for primary schools in 7 provinces/cities in the country beginning in 2020. In 2022, the program set a goal to expand the application of 6C’s method nationwide from 2023 to 2025 by monitoring and evaluation.. The Vietnam Institute of Educational Sciences issued an implementation guideline document, subsequently recommending that provinces and cities apply and integrate this method into the teaching of primary-level Physical Education. |
