Lao Ambassador to Vietnam Khamphao Ernthavanh spoke to Vietnamese media about the significance of the 16th National Assembly election and People's Councils at all levels for the 2026-2031 term in Vietnam's development process and expectations for parliamentary cooperation between the two countries.

Vietnam is set to conduct the 16th National Assembly and People's Councils elections for the 2026-2031 term. According to the Ambassador, what significance does this election hold for Vietnam's development in the coming period?

The 16th National Assembly and People's Councils elections for the 2026-2031 term, scheduled for March 15, is a major political event and a significant milestone in Vietnam's political life.

Firstly, it is an opportunity for the Vietnamese people to exercise their direct democratic rights by choosing outstanding, virtuous, and talented representatives who deserve to represent the people's will and aspirations in the highest state authority and local elected bodies. This contributes to consolidating the organizational apparatus and the cadre team in the political system from the central to local levels.

This election takes place as Vietnam is vigorously implementing strategic goals set at the 14th Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam. The core objective is to transform Vietnam into a developing country with modern industry and high middle income by 2030, and to become a developed, high-income nation by 2045, marking the 100th anniversary of the country's founding.

In recent years, Vietnam has achieved remarkable accomplishments: an economy exceeding $500 billion, a high economic growth rate of over 8% compared to the region, and total international trade turnover reaching $900 billion. These results provide a solid foundation for Vietnam to continue promoting development strategies such as digital transformation, green economic development, enhancing labor productivity, and fostering innovation.

In the current complex global context, maintaining a stable political environment and an effective governance system is particularly important. I am confident that the 16th National Assembly and the new term People's Councils will continue to play a bridging, supervisory, and policy-promoting role for the Government. This will help Vietnam successfully achieve its set goals, affirming its important position and role in the international integration process, especially within the ASEAN Community and free trade agreements.

I also believe that the election on March 15 will be a great success, creating new momentum for the S-shaped country to continue maintaining political stability, dynamic development, deep integration, and making positive contributions to peace and cooperation in the region and the world.

The special traditional friendship, comprehensive cooperation, and strategic connection between Vietnam and Laos have been continuously strengthened and developed. What are the Ambassador's expectations for the role of Vietnam's new National Assembly in further promoting parliamentary cooperation and enhancing relations between the two countries in the future?

The special solidarity, great friendship, comprehensive cooperation, and strategic partnership between our two countries have been continuously strengthened and developed in all fields recently. This includes significant contributions through the cooperation channel between the Lao National Assembly and the Vietnamese National Assembly.

In recent years, bilateral cooperation between the legislative bodies of the two countries has been continuously maintained and promoted through high-level visits and delegation exchanges between committees. Both sides actively exchange legislative experiences and decision-making on important national issues, such as experiences in amending the Constitution and laws, training staff for the Lao National Assembly Office, and providing technical support in legislative activities, supervision, and national policy planning.

Additionally, both sides closely coordinate at regional and international parliamentary forums such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), thereby contributing to promoting the common voice of the region for peace and development goals.

I hope and believe that the 16th National Assembly and the new term People's Councils of Vietnam will continue to play an important role in promoting deeper, more substantive, and effective parliamentary cooperation between the two countries. At the same time, both sides will enhance supervision and improve policies to facilitate economic, trade, and investment cooperation, infrastructure connectivity, and people-to-people exchanges.

Based on the foundation of the special relationship and high-level political trust between the two Parties, States, and peoples, I am confident that the two National Assemblies will continue to work closely, contributing to strengthening the comprehensive Vietnam-Laos cooperation. This is done for the practical benefits of the peoples of both countries, as well as for peace, stability, and sustainable development in the region and the world.

On this occasion, I wish Vietnam's upcoming election great success!

Thank you very much, Ambassador!
