During the meeting, Deputy Minister Dang Hoang Giang expressed thanks for the coordination of the U.S. Department of State in arranging and organizing activities for the high-level Vietnamese delegation attending the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly and engaging in bilateral activities in the United States.
Building on the positive outcomes achieved by both sides, Deputy Minister Dang Hoang Giang proposed that the two sides continue to enhance delegation exchanges and contacts at all levels, especially at the high level; and to leverage the roles of the two Ministries of Foreign Affairs in coordinating and promoting areas of cooperation while promptly addressing emerging issues.
Assistant Secretary of State Michael DeSombre affirmed that the United States values its Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Vietnam and Vietnam's international role, appreciating the positive developments in bilateral relations in recent times. He expressed a desire to continue close cooperation with Vietnam to promote collaboration in areas of mutual interest.
The Assistant Secretary shared the U.S.'s interest in expanding cooperation in economic-trade-investment, defense-security, science-technology, and other strategic areas; while affirming that the U.S. values Vietnam's role in the region and within ASEAN.
Regarding economic-trade relations, Deputy Minister Dang Hoang Giang emphasised that this is one of the crucial pillars and driving forces of the bilateral relationship. The conclusion of negotiations on the Agreement on Reciprocal, Fair, and Balanced Trade (ART) provides a foundation for the two countries to enter a new phase of stable, sustainable, balanced, and mutually beneficial development.
The Deputy Minister proposed that the U.S. collaborate to address existing issues in a constructive, fair, and balanced manner, taking into account Vietnam's development conditions. Deputy Minister Dang Hoang Giang affirmed that Vietnam will continue to facilitate long-term, effective investment and business by U.S. enterprises in Vietnam; and proposed enhanced cooperation in high-tech, semiconductors, energy, aviation, and other sectors.
On regional and international issues, Deputy Minister Dang Hoang Giang welcomed the U.S.'s continued support for ASEAN's central role; and proposed that the U.S. continue to actively and substantively participate in ASEAN-led mechanisms, contributing to the peace, stability, and development of the region.
Both sides agreed to continue promoting the Mekong-U.S. Partnership in a more substantive and effective manner, focusing on areas such as economic connectivity, supply chains, water resource management, human resource development, and addressing non-traditional security challenges.
They also exchanged views on other issues of mutual concern; agreeing on the importance of maintaining peace, stability, promoting dialogue, building trust, and respecting international law. Deputy Minister Dang Hoang Giang reaffirmed Vietnam's consistent stance on maintaining a peaceful and stable environment, ensuring maritime and aviation security, safety, and freedom; and resolving disputes by peaceful means based on international law.
At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides agreed to maintain regular exchange and dialogue channels between the two Ministries of Foreign Affairs; and to closely coordinate to promote the stable, substantive, and effective development of Vietnam-U.S. relations.
