COVID-19: Infection tally stays at 1,036 with 637 recoveries

The overall number of coronavirus cases in Vietnam remained at 1,036 with no more new patients detected during the past 12 hours, while 637 COVID-19 patients were declared to be free from the disease, the Ministry of Health reported on August 28 morning.

Of the total positive cases in the nation, 688 were local transmissions while the number of infections related to Da Nang, the biggest coronavirus epicenter in the nation since July 25 has increased to 548.

By now, the national count of recovered patients climbed to 637 after five more COVID-19 patients were discharged from hospital after making a full recovery on August 27.

There have been 30 fatalities caused by the novel coronavirus so far, most of them died of pre-existing underlying health problems and severe COVID-19 complications.

Among those still under treatment, 49 have tested negative once for SARS-CoV-2 that causes COVID-19, 47 twice and 31 thrice.

As many as 69,480 people who had close contact with confirmed cases or returned from pandemic-hit regions are under quarantine, with more than 1,590 at hospitals and the remainder at other isolation facilities or at places of residence.

Meanwhile, at a recent meeting with representatives from a number of ministries, agencies and localities, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc underlined the need to continue carrying out the dual goals of ensuring epidemic prevention and control and maintaining socio-economic development, while noting that the pandemic is being brought under stricter control.

The Government chief also hailed the epidemic containment efforts made by epidemic-hit localities, especially Da Nang, Hai Duong, Ha Noi, Ho Chi Minh City, Khanh Hoa and Quang Nam and urged them to stay vigilant in combating the disease.

Despite the pandemic being basically contained, there remains the possibility of the virus occurring in the community as more than 60% of infections displays no symptoms of the disease. Therefore, all localities should continue to strictly comply with regulations regarding epidemic prevention and control in a bid to halt the spread of the virus to the wider community, he emphasized.

Elsewhere, the central province of Quang Nam lifted the social distancing order according to the Prime Minister's Directive No. 16 in Duy Xuyen district, Dien Ban town and Hoi An city. The move started to become effective on August 28 morning.

To date, Quang Nam's health sector has taken more than 86,500 samples for SARS-CoV- 2 virus testing, of which 96 came back positive.
