Covid-19 and its test to governments worldwide

As many countries around the world are struggling with the Covid-19 pandemic, Viet Nam has been ranked as a role model in curbing the life-threatening disease.

Viet Nam, by now, has still been ranked as a role model in acting aggressively early to curb Covid-19.

Covid-19, a novel virus first began in Wuhan, China in late 2019, has spread to more than 200 countries and territories. At first, Hubei government acted subjectively and intended to disguise the pandemic.

However, since early 2020, coronavirus has spread rapidly and the amount of those who died of this disease have reached hundreds in Wuhan. Hubei government flutters. Many senior government officials like Hubei Party Secretary, Wuhan Communist Party leader were dismissed.

By the end of February, when Covid-19 was basically controlled in China, there were already more than 80,000 confirmed cases and 3,000 deaths reported, economic losses in the first two months of the year were estimated at US$ 196 billion (says Chu Ban, ex-IMF official).

In Korea, at first, the government had only focused on taking entering passengers’ temperature at airports and ports of entry, instead of putting the Shinchenji Church of Jesus under control. The church’s activities have been blamed for the intense outbreak of Covid-19 at the end of February. By March, there were 8,162 confirmed cases and 75 deaths reported in Korea.

After initial confusions, thanks to the combination of information technology applications that help the process of transparency epidemiological data and the active cooperation of the public, the Korean government has curbed the pandemic early.

But the most damage has been recorded in many Western countries. Despite possessing the best living conditions, facilities and health care system in the world, many Western countries like Italy, Spain, England, and the U.S. are suffering the worst damage. The governments’ initial subjectivity and the people’s indifference when they treated Covid-19 as seasonal flu and refused to wear masks in public have caused the outbreak at a particular difficulty to control.

Until now, there have been more than 15,300 Italians, around 12,000 Spaniards, more than 7,500 French, 4,300 England, and 8,500 Americans who died of Covid-19. These are disastrous numbers for such the middle and superpower nations of G7 and OECD.

Viet Nam, by now, has still been ranked as a role model in acting aggressively early to curb Covid-19. The nation shares a large land border with China – the disease’s origination point, trading across borders happening often leading to social interaction, combined with many migrant workers in Korea, but the total Covid-19 infected cases spread from these two countries is remained small.

In March, when coronavirus broke out in European countries, Viet Nam only has hundreds of infected patients. Today, the nation has reported just more than 200 confirmed cases, nearly half of those have been cured and it has yet to confirm a single death from the disease.

The Vietnamese government has been fully aware of the danger from the beginning with robust and early action

Since the Lunar New Year, the government has advised citizens not to come to Wuhan after a source said that there was a new virus causing acute pneumonia. Travelers at international ports of entry with China have to go through temperature screening and have to report their health declaration.

Immediately after confirming the first infected case in Vinh Phuc province, the government has placed Son Loi village under a lockdown for 14 days. The aggressive and early measures have curbed the spread of Covid-19.

In the early days of March, when Viet Nam reported confirmed cases of people coming back from England, Italy and other Western countries, the image of Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam staying up all night, directing the pandemic prevention measures has touched many people’s hearts. Stock-pilling occurring in Australia or U.S – U.K. does not happen in Viet Nam.

The government’s strong, robust measures and transparency information have gained trust from the citizens. Dalia Research (Germany), conducted a survey at 45 countries and territories and announced the result on March 30th showing the Vietnamese government is the world’s most trusted government by citizens in the fight against Covid-19.

It is too early to demonstrate that Viet Nam will overcome the Covid-19 pandemic with a perfect playbook. However, with what has been so far proven, it is possible to believe that with the active, strong, and careful guidance of the government, Viet Nam will win with the lowest loss of life.

Hence, Covid-19 is the most accurate test of perceptions, attitudes, and actions of governments worldwide, including Viet Nam.
