In his opening remarks, Mr. Pham Quang Toan, Deputy Director General of the Fisheries Department, Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, emphasized the importance of fisheries for food security, the livelihoods of hundreds of millions of fishermen, and regional economic growth.
He noted that the Asia-Pacific region currently accounts for nearly 90% of global fishery production but is also the most vulnerable to climate change and extreme weather events. Vietnam has been implementing various policies such as controlling IUU fishing, developing high-tech marine aquaculture, circular and smart aquaculture, and action plans to combat climate change and protect marine ecosystems.
