Speaking at the event, Saudi Arabian Ambassador to Vietnam Mohammed Ismaeil A. Dahlwy said that world is facing unprecedented environmental challenges, including climate change, global warming, depletion of ozone, deforestation, ocean degradation, and loss of biodiversity. These challenges principally arise from a combination of unsustainable industrial practices, rapid expansion of urban sprawl, and human activities.
Saudi Arabia is vulnerable to climate change and encounters a number of ecological problems and has given great attention and importance to environmental preservation, and committed to advancing the global fight against climate change. The Kingdom is implementing many initiatives at the national level and have adopted a whole-of-government approach, he said.
He named some of policies and regulations that have been issued to limit the negative impacts of humans and development process on ecosystems, notably the Saudi Vision 2030, which was launched by the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in 2016, putting the environment, a renewable energy mix, and sustainability at the heart of the Kingdom’s development toward a greener future; the Saudi initiative that aims to plant 10 billion trees and seedlings, to combat desertification, and obtaining plant wealth will enable us to capture carbon naturally; and the Middle East Green Initiative, and this initiative involves 23 countries to do the same in the region, etc.

He also stated that like Saudi Arabia, Vietnam is also at risk of climate change and confronts many environmental problems and lauded Vietnam’s high determination and drastic actions to promote environmental protection.
“The campaign launched by the Government of Vietnam to plant one billion trees nationwide in the 2021-2025 period is similar to my country’s plan to increase the vegetation under the Saudi Green Initiative. Such a campaign, for sure, will significantly contribute to the international efforts in tackling climate change,” he said.
“In addition, Vietnam’s targets to cut half of plastic debris in the ocean by 2025, then 75% by 2030, and reach net zero emissions by 2050 have demonstrated your country’s responsibility in addressing global ecological challenges.”
He also appreciated endeavors exerted by Vietnamese people at grassroot levels, trying to raise the awareness about pollutions and improve their surrounding environment and experessed his belief that Saudi Arabia and Vietnam will succeed in the green journeys toward conserving the green color of the planet.
