According to Ms. Russell, at least 972 children in Ukraine have been killed or injured since the conflict began nearly six months ago. Thus, on average, there are more than 5 child casualties/day. This is the number that the UN can verify, the actual number is said to be much higher.
The start of the new school year is just over a week away. This is a wake-up call to the enormous loss of children in Ukraine. Ukraine's education system has been devastated by the conflict. UNICEF estimates that 1 in 10 schools is damaged or destroyed. UNICEF has repeatedly called on all parties to respect their international obligations, protect children and ensure that humanitarian workers can quickly and safely reach the field to help children in need.
