Green tourism is the issue concerned early in Vietnam, including Thua Thien Hue province. The province chose green connection as the direction for future tourism development with 4 main factors: green destination, green journey, green people and green service to form green tourism product.
Typical cultural heritage
Mr. Nguyen Van Phuc, Thua Thien Hue’s Director of Tourism Department said that the basis to develop green tourism in this province is the scene naturally to environment at urban. Hue is the first city in Vietnam honored by World Wide Fund (WWF) as “National Green City” because of its trees density per capita 12.9 msqr/people (2022). Green trees, parks are arranged suistably throughout the city and rivers.
In addition, this province also has attractive system of rivers, beaches, mountains and jungle, a long history tradition and the ancient Imperial Hue capital which is preserving a cultural “heritage” typical for Vietnamese culture and for the human being.
Thua Thien Hue province also has system of diversity natural resources, with beautiful beaches such as Lang Co, Thuan An and Canh Duong. In particular, the Tam Giang - Cau Hai lagoon system is the largest one in Southeast Asia, with a system of rivers and canals stretching across the province such as Huong River, O Lau River, Bo River, Truoi River...
From those systems above, Thua Thien Hue province could develop many tourism types such as high quality cultural tourism associated with beach tourism, community tourism, ecosystem tourism and relaxation.
Recently, Thua Thien Hue province has promoted its potentials and advatanges to attract investment to green tourism with goals of green growth and suistanable development, reserving the integrity of the natural landscape.
Thua Thien Hue province’s Tourism Department said that the provincial People’s Committee has issued some policies to support community tourism, assist, preserve and promote typical value of garden house and beam house in this province.
Along with that, tourism department and localities in this province assisted products formation and development, tourism associated with preserving ecosystem, promote community’s livelihoods.
Until now, there are 15 tourism destinations regconized by Thua Thien Hue People’s Committee as provincial-level tourist destinations, including 12 eco-tourism destination with community-associated such as Luong Quan - Nguyet Bieu garden house in Hue City, Thanh Toan Tile Bridge area in Huong Thuy town or Dam Chuon ecological area in Phu Vang district...
Applying digital technology in green tourism development
Thua Thien Hue tourism’s green development direction is determined to closely align with the goals of Resolution No. 54-NQ/TW of the Politburo on building and developing Thua Thien Hue to 2030, vision by 2045: "Build and develop Thua Thien Hue province to become a centrally run city on the foundation of preserving and promoting the value of the ancient capital's heritage and Hue cultural identity, with its cultural and heritage characteristics, ecologics, landscape environmentally smart and friendly”.
At “2023 Hue Tourism Connection” Conference held recently, Mr. Nguyen Trung Khanh, Director of National Administration of Tourism evaluated that Thua Thien Hue province has been evaluating tourism industry with suistanable direction, building suitable tourism products with new tendencies of tourists.

“Thua Thien Hue needs to identify and focus on developing a number of outstanding tourism products with the province's advantages to bring attractive experiences to tourists. Improving professionalism in traditional activities and promoting advertising. Promoting tourism products and programs to attract tourists to position the brand”.
Digital transformation currently is the orientation from Party, and State with many guiding documents and resolutions being issued. Applying information technology and promoting digital transformation to effectively support tourism recovery is also very necessary for the locality in the current context", Mr. Nguyen Trung Khanh suggested.
According to the Director of Tourism Department in Thua Thien Hue province, in order to continue developing green tourism, the department will research to effectively exploit resources; build and develop tours, experiential tourism products, eco-tourism, relaxation tourism, community tourism, rural agricultural tourism, sports tourism, etc. with sightseeing and island exploration activities, ensuring the principles of developing ecological, cultural and historical tourism sustainably while sharing benefits with the community.
Along with that, the department will apply digital technology to green tourism development management, the official added.
