President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev personally welcomed General Secretary To Lam and his spouse at the airport. Also present at the reception were Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Murat Nurtleu; Deputy Prime Minister for Economic and Social Affairs Kosherbayev; Presidential Foreign Policy Advisor Erzhan Kazykhan; Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Vietnam Kanat Tumysh; Minister of Health Azhar Giniyatovna Alnazarova; and Mayor of Astana Zhenis Kasymbek.

This visit marks the highest-level Vietnamese delegation to Kazakhstan since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1992, shortly after Kazakhstan gained independence from the former Soviet Union.

General Secretary To Lam’s visit comes at a time when Vietnam and Kazakhstan have made significant progress in their bilateral ties. Notably, the relationship saw renewed momentum following President Tokayev’s visit to Vietnam in 2023.

Bilateral trade has witnessed remarkable growth, doubling from over 400 million USD in 2022 to more than 850 million USD in 2023, and is expected to approach 1 billion USD in 2024.

In an interview ahead of the visit, Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Vietnam Kanat Tumysh, remarked that over the past three decades, the Vietnam-Kazakhstan relationship has been continually nurtured and is now entering a new phase of development—a "golden period" with strong potential for comprehensive cooperation in multiple fields. He highlighted key areas such as logistics, transportation, defense, and tourism.

For over 30 years, the two countries have maintained a strong traditional friendship, supported each other at international forums, and shared common ground on global issues.

According to Ambassador of Vietnam to Kazakhstan Pham Thai Nhu Mai, this historic visit will see the announcement of a new cooperation framework, elevating bilateral ties in alignment with the aspirations and interests of both nations.

A series of important agreements are expected to be signed during the visit, covering defense, security, justice, economic and trade connectivity, investment, finance, science and technology, digital transformation, energy and mining, culture, sports, tourism, and people-to-people and local-level exchanges. Both sides are also looking forward to the launch of Vietnam’s trade and investment representative office in Kazakhstan and Central Asia.
