'Following the Golden Star': Bringing Vietnam’s history closer to young people

Through documents, photographs, archival films, artifacts and interactive technology, the program helps visitors gain a deeper understanding of the historical significance of the August Revolution in 1945 and National Day on September 2, while fostering national pride, awareness of safeguarding the achievements of the revolution and a sense of responsibility to carry forward the national tradition in building and defending the country.

The program features a range of interactive activities. “Milestones of the Historic Autumn” presents the course of the August Revolution and National Day through four key milestones: the Southern Uprising in 1940; the establishment of the Vietnam Propaganda Unit of Liberation Army on December 22, 1944; the August Revolution in 1945; and National Day on September 2, 1945.

Among the featured materials are documents and exhibits relating to the red flag with a yellow star, the 34 soldiers at the founding ceremony of the Vietnam Liberation Army Team, the nationwide uprising to seize power, and President Ho Chi Minh’s reading of the Declaration of Independence at Ba Dinh Square, highlighting the nation’s long struggle for independence.

While “Milestones of the Historic Autumn” helps visitors visualize the sequence of major historical events, “Echoes of Independence Day” creates a more immersive experience through interactive technology, recreating key moments from September 2, 1945.

Meanwhile, “Fragments of Time” provides visitors with an opportunity to directly search for, observe and explore information from historical documents, photographs and artifacts, turning historical knowledge into an engaging process of discovery.

The combination of exhibitions, guided interpretation and interactive technology has particularly attracted young people. Nguyen Thi Loan, a student at Hanoi University of Culture, said the program offers a fresh approach to learning history, allowing young people to actively explore the past rather than simply absorb knowledge from textbooks.

“Following the Golden Star” not only contributes to promoting the value of Vietnam’s military historical heritage but also serves as a bridge connecting the past with the present.

Through these historical “fragments,” the program helps nurture national pride, love for the homeland and a sense of responsibility among younger generations to preserve and promote national traditions while continuing the journey of building and defending the country.
