The pair, who are in Spain to attend the 14th Asia-Europe Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, expressed their pleasure at the strong and comprehensive advancements of the Vietnam-EU relationship which has been further consolidated by the signing of trade and investment deals and framework participation agreement.

Minh extended congratulations to Borrell on his appointment as the EU’s new High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, wishing him to continue supporting stronger ties between ASEAN and the EU in general and between Vietnam and the EU in particular.

Vietnam always attaches importance to the relationship with the EU, standing ready to exchange on issues on mutual concerns, Deputy PM, FM Minh affirmed.

He suggested the EU side to accelerate the ratification of the trade and investment deals signed last June to bring practical benefits to citizens and businesses of the two sides.

Meanwhile, Borrell hailed Vietnam as one of the fastest-growing and dynamic economies in Asia.

Both Vietnam and the EU share numerous potential to further strengthen multilateral cooperation across fields like politics, security, defense, economy, culture and peace-keeping operations among others, said Borrell.

Regarding regional and international situation, the sides underlined the need to maintain peace, stability and rule of law, and to settle disputes through peaceful measures in line with international law.

They vowed to continue fostering collaboration at multilateral forums like the United Nations, ASEM, and ASEAN-led mechanisms in the coming years, particularly in 2020 when Vietnam undertakes the role as the ASEAN Chair and non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.
