In the condolence book at the Japanese Embassy, the Deputy Prime Minister emotionally wrote: “The leadership and people of Vietnam deeply mourn Mr. Murayama Tomiichi – a great and close friend of the leadership and people of Vietnam. On behalf of the Government and people of Vietnam, I extend my deepest condolences to the Government, people of Japan, and Mr. Murayama Tomiichi’s family.

The passing of Mr. Murayama is not only a great loss for Japan but also for the international community, including Vietnam. The special affection and invaluable support Mr. Murayama extended to Vietnam and the cooperative friendship between our two countries are priceless assets in Vietnam-Japan relations.”

Deputy Prime Minister Son affirmed that the Government and people of Vietnam always remember and cherish the profound affection and significant contributions of the late Prime Minister Murayama to Vietnam — not only during his tenure as Prime Minister of Japan but also in his role as Chairman of the Council for the Promotion of Vietnam-Japan Peace and Friendship later on.

The Deputy Prime Minister expressed his belief that with sincere, trusting, and close ties, Vietnam and Japan will overcome this profound sorrow and loss together, continuing the path that the late Prime Minister Murayama diligently nurtured, advancing the relationship between the two countries to become deeper, more effective, and sustainable.

Former Prime Minister Murayama Tomiichi passed away on October 17, 2025, in his hometown, Oita Prefecture, at the age of 101. He was the first Prime Minister from the Japanese Socialist Party, serving as the Head of the Japanese Government from June 1994 to January 1996.
