On November 7th, the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs announced that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will visit the headquarters of the US Indo-Pacific Command in Hawaii during a weeklong trip to the US in mid-November. According to the US State Department, within the framework of the visit, the Philippine President may raise the issue of East Sea dispute with top US officials.
Deputy Foreign Minister Charles Jose said that from November 18-19th, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will travel to Hawaii to meet business leaders and the Philippine community after attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders’ meeting in San Francisco, US, from November 14-17th.
Mr. Marcos will also meet Admiral John Aquilino, Commander of the US Indo-Pacific Command, at the latter’s headquarter in Pearl Harbor on the island of Oahu. Philippine officials emphasized that President Marcos will have a discussion about security, which may include the situation in the East Sea.
Addresing the press about the importance of the visit in the face of Beijing's assertive actions in the East Sea and the context of negotiations on strengthening trilateral cooperation between the Philippines, the US and Japan, Deputy Foreign Minister Jose said: “Of course, the visit adds another layer to the cooperation we are trying to establish with like-minded countries to promote what we have always advocated: A rules-based order, especially in the maritime domain.”
The Philippine Deputy Foreign Minister also noted that President Marcos will also have a working visit to Los Angeles from November 17-18, 2023.
