The credential presentation ceremony was held solemnly with the presence of Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa; Ana Isabel Xavier, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation; Cataria Vaz Anfonso, Foreign Affairs Advisor to the President, along with many senior Portuguese officials.
Immediately after the ceremony, President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa received Ambassador Nguyen Manh Thang.
During the meeting, the Ambassador conveyed greetings and regards from President Luong Cuong to President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
Affirming Vietnam's commitment to its relationship with Portugal, one of Vietnam's key partners in the EU, the Ambassador emphasized that the decision to open the Vietnamese Embassy in Portugal demonstrates the high-level leadership's determination to elevate bilateral relations, paving the way for broader cooperation, especially in areas of long-term significance.
To deepen the cooperative relationship between the two countries, Ambassador Nguyen Manh Thang highlighted that in the coming time, the Vietnamese Embassy in Portugal will prioritize promoting delegation exchanges, especially high-level ones, to enhance political trust and drive cooperation across all fields; boost trade and investment cooperation, aiming to increase bilateral trade turnover to 1 billion USD annually from the current 700 million USD; foster bilateral cooperation in renewable energy, innovation, infrastructure; and promote cooperation between localities of the two countries, expanding collaboration in education and training, culture, sports, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges.
The Ambassador also expressed gratitude and requested the Portuguese Government to continue facilitating the Vietnamese community living and working in Portugal, enhancing their role as a bridge in bilateral relations.

Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa highly appreciated Vietnam's dynamic development, considering Vietnam a bright spot in economic development in the region.
Recognizing Vietnam as one of Portugal's important partners in the Asia-Pacific region and within ASEAN, President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa emphasized that establishing permanent diplomatic missions in each other's capitals is a breakthrough step, aligning with the potential and cooperative interests of both countries.
To develop bilateral relations more comprehensively, substantively, and effectively in the future, the Portuguese President suggested that the Vietnamese Embassy in Portugal and Ambassador Nguyen Manh Thang personally promote cooperation in maritime economy, science and technology, renewable energy, agriculture, creating conditions for Portugal's "unicorn" companies to invest in Vietnam. He also affirmed that Portuguese agencies will closely cooperate with the Vietnamese Embassy in Portugal in implementing the Embassy's priority tasks.
The Portuguese President recalled the positive impression from his meeting with President Luong Cuong at the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York (USA) in September 2025; he requested Ambassador Nguyen Manh Thang to convey his regards to President Luong Cuong and other senior leaders of Vietnam.
