Vietnam has played a proactive and responsible role in promoting ASEAN to admit new members, thus helping this organization to bring together all the continental countries and archipelagoes in the region and no longer being geographically divided.
Secretary General Kao Kim Hourn affirmed that Vietnam has been very proactive, not only in participating but also actively contributing to ASEAN in many different ways, especially in building a community on the three pillars of politics and security, economy, cultural and social affairs, as well as enhancing the external relations of the bloc.
The country also engages in all the mechanisms established by ASEAN, and is one of the active participants and plays a key role in the drafting of the ASEAN Charter to ensure that it is a guideline for the development of the ASEAN community.
Dr. Kao Kim Hourn also expressed his impression of Vietnam's strong economic and trade development with the signing of many bilateral and multilateral free trade agreements (FTAs).
Vietnam has established its own position in this regional organization and won many successes in three times holding the ASEAN Chair in 1998, 2000 and 2020, he said.
The nation also has a lot of experience in ASEAN integration activities, alternately taking on the role of coordinator for relations with dialogue partner countries, and assuming many important roles in global organizations such the United Nations Security Council.
Expressing his wish that Vietnam continue to play a role of active ASEAN member, Kao Kim Hourn said that Vietnam can share many valuable experience with other countries in the region in boosting economic development, improving the quality of human resources, ensuring public health, disaster management, diplomacy and promoting the participation of external partners.
This is in addition to continuing to support the development of ASEAN in a variety of fields and community pillars, as well as the development of sub-regions including the Mekong sub-region, he added.
