Vietnamese Rescue Team recovers nine more earthquake victims in Venezuela

WVR - The Vietnamese Rescue Team in Venezuela has actively carried out the mission of recovering the victims' bodies, bringing the total number of victims found to 23.

On July 1 (local time), the Vietnamese team continued their search and rescue efforts in Playa Grande, La Guaira state, Venezuela. This area, with many high-rise buildings on steep slopes, suffered severe collapses following the most devastating double earthquake in Venezuela in over a century.

During their participation in the earthquake aftermath recovery in Playa Grande, La Guaira state, Venezuela, the Vietnamese rescue team accurately identified 16 locations where victims were trapped.

The team actively carried out their mission at 9 locations, successfully recovering the victims' bodies, bringing the total number of victims found to 23. The team also handed over the remaining 7 locations to local authorities and on-site forces.

Before commencing the search in this area, Major General Pham Van Ty, Deputy Director of the Rescue Department, General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army, and team leader, urged members to continue building on their achievements. He emphasized that the mission is both an international obligation and a gesture of goodwill from Vietnam to Venezuela, urging them to dedicate their full effort and energy to race against time in mitigating the earthquake's aftermath.

In the harsh mission environment, the Army and Police forces closely coordinated with equipment, forming different teams to swiftly and effectively search for trapped victims. Service dogs were initially deployed to identify potential victim locations within collapsed structures. Subsequently, the engineering team used sound detection equipment and through-wall radar to accurately determine positions and devise ways to extract the victims.

During the mission, teams continued to expand their search areas upon receiving support requests from victims' families. The medical team continued to provide emergency care and treatment to residents in the area at the collection station.

Previously, on June 30 (local time), the Vietnamese team had identified and recovered 13 victims' bodies from the rubble.

This marks the third time the Vietnam People's Army and People's Public Security have dispatched forces and equipment abroad for humanitarian aid and disaster relief missions. The Vietnamese team participating in the earthquake aftermath recovery in Venezuela consists of 124 members.

Interim President of Venezuela Delcy Rodriguez has declared a seven-day national mourning to honour the victims of the double earthquake disaster. In a social media post, Delcy Rodriguez announced the seven-day national mourning starting at 6 PM on July 1 (local time) and sent messages of consolation and encouragement to those enduring the tragedy, reaffirming the commitment to always support and protect them.
