Vietnamese badminton athlete wins silver at Asian U-15 championships

Vietnamese young player Nguyen Thi Thu Huyen on August 25 won a silver medal at the Badminton Asia U17 & U15 Junior Championships 2024 held in Chengdu, China.

Vietnamese young player Nguyen Thi Thu Huyen lost 20-22, 11-21 to the No. 1 seed of the tournament Tanvi Patri of India in the women's singles U15 final.

Liu Yu Tong of the host country and Kungkaew Kakanik of Thailand shared the third place.

According to coach Khoa Trung Kien who is in charge of badminton at the Sports Authority of Vietnam under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, this is the first time that a Vietnamese player was in a gold-medal match at an Asian level tournament.

He said this achievement is a positive outcome for Vietnam's badminton and Huyen is one of the rising stars.

The championships took place from August 20-26, with players competing in men's and women's singles and doubles and mixed doubles in the U15 and U17 age groups.

Vietnam had seven athletes at the tournament but only Huyen reached the final.
